Start with the series’ official credits, identify the specific creator role you care about, then confirm that role on an official portfolio or studio page for each title you consider. “Creator” can mean original-work author, director, writer, character designer, or mechanical designer; sharing a name does not mean two works were made in the same way or will feel alike.
Why the exact credit matters
Anime and games are collaborative productions, and “by the creator” is not a precise credit. A person may have originated a story, directed a production, written some of it, or contributed a particular design. Those connections are meaningful, but they are not interchangeable.
The Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs’ animation guide distinguishes creative contributions on The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, including Shoji Kawamori’s Valkyrie design and Noboru Ishiguro’s direction (Agency for Cultural Affairs animation guide). A mechanical-design credit, for example, is not evidence that the person directed the anime.
How to trace a creator’s other work
- Find the official credits. Check the anime or game’s official site, staff page, end credits, or official release materials. Note the person’s name and exact role.
- Search for an authoritative portfolio. Look for the creator’s official works or filmography page, or a biography from the studio, rights holder, or distributor. A role-aware search phrase such as “official works” or “filmography” can help distinguish a portfolio from a fan-made list.
- Sort by medium and role. Separate anime, films, games, and other formats, then distinguish original creation, direction, writing, design, and supervision. Do not treat all entries as equivalent authorship.
- Confirm each candidate title. Open its official page or release materials and check the person’s credit there. A portfolio entry establishes participation, not necessarily sole authorship.
- Choose based on the connection you want. Compare the role, format, genre or tone, and availability in your region. Credits establish who did what; they do not by themselves establish that a work resembles your favorite or that it is currently accessible where you live.
Examples across anime and games
Shoji Kawamori: original creation, design, and game work
Kawamori’s official portfolio organizes credits by medium and role (Shoji Kawamori official works). It lists him as original creator and director for The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Genesis of Aquarion. Other anime entries identify mechanical-design work instead. In games, the portfolio lists DAEMON X MACHINA for mechanical concept design and Devil May Cry 5 for Devil Breaker design.
#1 Best Overall
These credits point to different kinds of involvement. If the appeal of a favorite series is its original premise or direction, an entry with that role is a closer credit-based match than a game entry for a specific design contribution. The latter may still interest you, but it should not be described as a game directed or authored by Kawamori on the strength of that credit alone.
Sunao Katabuchi: anime and game credits
Contrail’s official creator profile connects Sunao Katabuchi’s television work on Black Lagoon with game credits for Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies (director and writer), Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War (writer), and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (writer) (Contrail creator profile for Sunao Katabuchi). The game credits are substantial, but they are not the same role as directing an anime series.

Compare candidates without assuming they are alike
When you have multiple possibilities, put the credit first. That makes the strength and type of the connection easy to evaluate before you weigh format or taste.

| The Super Dimension Fortress Macross | TV anime | Shoji Kawamori: original creator and director | Portfolio also lists Kawamori as original creator and director of Genesis of Aquarion. | Check current local services or retailers; not established by the cited portfolio. |

Check availability separately
Official creator portfolios are useful for verifying published credits and formats, not for determining what is streaming, on sale, or playable in a particular country today. Once you have a candidate, check current regional streaming catalogs, game storefronts, or local retailers. Availability can change independently of a creator’s portfolio.
