The games below are starting points with different kinds of overlap, not claims that any one of them reproduces all of GTA.
Decide which part of GTA you want to keep
“Open world” describes a broad kind of setting, not a specific gameplay loop. A game can let you roam freely yet have little in common with GTA’s blend of vehicles, on-foot action, crime, and missions. Before choosing, rank the ingredients that matter to you:

- World and movement: Do you want a modern city, a rural landscape, or a historical setting? Should you be able to roam freely, or is access mostly limited to mission areas?
- Vehicles: Is driving essential? Do you want to switch between driving and on-foot play?
- Action: Are you looking for shooting, melee combat, stealth, or a combination?
- Role and story: Do you want to play a criminal, a detective, or someone in another role?
- Tone: Would you prefer grounded crime drama, satire, or exaggerated action?
- Practical fit: Does the specific edition work on your platform, and is its content rating appropriate?
A request such as “an open world where you can drive, exit the vehicle, and shoot” is a more useful starting filter than “something like GTA.” Those are examples of individual players describing what they want, not evidence about how common any preference is.
Consider these GTA-adjacent starting points
A GamesRadar feature names Sleeping Dogs and the Mafia series among games with ingredients that may appeal to GTA players. The available descriptions support treating them as candidates, not as verified matches for every mechanic on your list.

Sleeping Dogs
GamesRadar names Sleeping Dogs as an alternative in its games-like-GTA feature. Consider it as a candidate if you want a crime-focused open-world game, then check the specific edition’s store page for its gameplay, platform, and availability. The cited feature does not establish those edition-specific details.
Mafia series
GamesRadar presents the Mafia series as a starting point for open-world players interested in organized crime. Compare the particular entry against your priorities rather than assuming every game in the series has the same mechanics or platform support.

L.A. Noire
ESRB describes L.A. Noire as an open-world action-adventure starring detective Cole Phelps. Its cases involve interviewing witnesses and suspects, searching crime scenes, and making arrests. That makes it a candidate for players drawn to a crime setting and investigations, but its detective role and case-focused activities are different from free-form criminal play.
Check the exact edition before choosing
Platform and content details belong to a particular release, not to a broad category like “GTA-like.” Verify them for the edition you intend to play:

- Platform: Confirm the game is listed for your console or PC storefront. Platform support can vary by title and edition.
- Edition and availability: Check the current store listing for the exact release; do not assume a series-level recommendation identifies a currently available edition.
- Age rating and descriptors: Read that game’s own rating entry. ESRB rates Grand Theft Auto V Mature 17+ and lists blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, strong sexual content, and drug and alcohol use. Those descriptors apply to GTA V, not automatically to other games.
For another current platform example, Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Recheck the page when making a platform decision, since listings can change.

If your priority is organized crime, Sleeping Dogs and the Mafia series are named places to begin; if you want investigation and a detective protagonist, L.A. Noire has an ESRB description that supports that distinction. For a close mechanical match—especially driving, switching to on-foot action, and shooting—verify those features in the specific game’s current listing before deciding. “Similar to GTA” is most useful as a shortlist, not a guarantee of identical play.
