On AO3, start with the NHL | National Hockey League works listing, then narrow results with a team tag, player or relationship tag, and one or two trope tags. If you want stories about real hockey players, check the separate Men’s Hockey RPF fandom too. Before reading, review each work’s rating, warnings, tags, and completion status.
Choose the right AO3 starting point
AO3 has two useful entry points, depending on what you want to read. The NHL tag can surface broad NHL-related fiction, including cross-fandom works. Men’s Hockey RPF is a more direct starting point for fan-created fiction about actual hockey players. Some works may be tagged in ways that make checking both worthwhile.
- NHL | National Hockey League: start here for broad NHL-connected stories and team-focused searches.
- Men’s Hockey RPF: use this when you are specifically looking for real-person fiction about hockey players.
For context on hockey RPF’s community terminology and organization, see Fanlore’s Hockey RPF overview. It notes that the community includes pairings clustered around teams and divisions, as well as hockey beyond the NHL.
Build a search around team, player, and trope
Once you open a fandom listing, combine the tags that describe the story you want. A team tag can help find stories with a particular club’s setting or atmosphere; a player or relationship tag can focus the cast; and a trope tag can narrow the story dynamic.

- Choose a team tag. Use the linked archive tag when available rather than assuming every author writes the team name the same way. Examples visible in NHL-tagged works include “Carolina Hurricanes NHL Team” and “Edmonton Oilers NHL Team.”
- Add a player or relationship tag. On AO3, relationship labels commonly use a slash between names for a romantic or sexual pairing and an ampersand for a non-romantic relationship. Check the tag label and its linked works to confirm it matches your intent.
- Add one or two trope tags, such as “slow burn,” “hurt/comfort,” “enemies to lovers,” “mutual pining,” “alternate universe,” or “team as family.” These are examples of tags used in NHL-related listings, not a complete or guaranteed vocabulary.
- Use AO3’s filters to include or exclude ratings, archive warnings, categories, and other tags. Then read the work’s own tags and summary before opening it.
Example searches to adapt include NHL | National Hockey League + a team tag + “slow burn,” or Men’s Hockey RPF + a player or pairing tag + “hurt/comfort.” These are search patterns, not promises that a particular combination will return works.
Try alternate names when a search is sparse
Fan tags do not always use the same wording as a formal player-name search. If a full-name relationship tag returns little, try a familiar pairing nickname, then inspect linked or related tags. AO3’s tag-wrangling system connects some fan-created terms while preserving the wording people use.

A University of Waterloo thesis on men’s hockey RPF describes this balance: “This hybrid folksonomy affords searchability of the archive (where freetagging does not) and the creation of fanon (which controlled vocabulary tags do not).” The thesis gives “Bennguin” as an example connected to “Jamie Benn/Tyler Seguin.” Trying both a nickname and the names in the formal relationship tag can therefore reveal different routes into related works. See the University of Waterloo thesis for its discussion of hockey RPF and tag practices.
If results still feel too narrow, remove one constraint at a time—for example, keep the player and trope but drop the team tag. This helps show whether the limitation comes from the particular tag combination rather than the broader fandom listing.

Screen works before you read
Tags help with discovery, but they do not replace checking a work’s own metadata. Before opening a result, review its rating, archive warnings, category, relationship labels, additional tags, summary, and whether it is complete or ongoing. AO3’s filters can exclude some unwanted ratings or warnings, while the individual work page gives you the context for deciding whether to continue.
Men’s Hockey RPF is fiction about real people. Treat romantic and personal portrayals as fan-created stories, not factual claims about players or their private lives.

Why counts and tag results change
Archive listings and tag inventories are dynamic: authors add works, revise tags, and use different wording. A displayed total is a snapshot, not a durable measure of how much NHL fanfiction exists or how popular a pairing is. The linked NHL listing is a third-party mirror, so use it to understand tag and filter examples rather than as a definitive live count. Availability and results should be checked in the archive interface.
