In iOS 27, Apple Intelligence can help you find Home camera recordings by searching descriptions in ordinary language. Enable Apple Intelligence in Home, then turn on video descriptions for each compatible camera. If search does not surface the clip, you can still browse the camera’s recording timeline.
What natural-language search does
Apple says Apple Intelligence can create descriptions for compatible Home cameras and lets you search recordings using natural language. This gives you another way to locate a recorded event besides scanning the camera timeline. Apple’s guide does not specify the search screen or button labels, supported query syntax, how results are ranked, or when descriptions become available, so the exact controls and behavior may vary.

For example, you might try a phrase such as “show me the delivery” to look for a package event. That is an illustrative query, not a phrase Apple documents or guarantees will work.

Apple lists these requirements for Apple Intelligence-generated Home camera descriptions:

- An Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Apple’s iOS 27 guide lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later.
- A home hub, such as HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K, running the latest operating system software.
- Apple Intelligence enabled in the Home app.
- A 2 TB iCloud+ plan.
Apple says Apple Intelligence availability varies by language and region, and usage limits may apply. Device support and other requirements can change, so check Apple’s current iOS 27 Home camera instructions if the option is missing. You do not need to buy new hardware if you already have the required iPhone and home hub, or change plans if you already have the required iCloud+ plan.
Turn on Apple Intelligence video descriptions
- On your eligible iPhone, open the Home app.
- Go to the Home tab and tap More, then Home Settings.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Enable video descriptions for each compatible camera you want analyzed.
Once descriptions are available, search your recordings using natural language. Apple does not document an exact search path or promise a particular indexing delay, so the precise controls and timing should not be assumed.

If search does not find the recording, browse the timeline
You can look through recorded footage directly from the camera view:

- In Home, open the camera tile.
- Swipe the timeline at the bottom of the screen to browse recordings.
- Tap a clip to play it. Tap Live to return to the live camera view.
For cameras configured to detect specific motion, timeline symbols can indicate people, animals, vehicles, or packages. If a clip has an Unanalyzed Video badge, Apple says it was recorded but specific-motion analysis was not performed. This can happen when there are more cameras than capable Home Hubs available to analyze them. See Apple’s Home camera setup and recording guide for the standard timeline workflow.

How long recordings remain available, and camera limits
Apple says HomeKit Secure Video activity is available in Home for the last 10 days. Its iCloud User Guide lists these general camera limits by iCloud+ plan:

Apple says recorded video does not count against iCloud storage. These are the general HomeKit Secure Video limits; separately, Apple lists a 2 TB iCloud+ plan as a requirement for Apple Intelligence camera descriptions. See Apple’s iCloud guide to HomeKit Secure Video for plan details.

What Apple says about video privacy
Apple describes HomeKit Secure Video as end-to-end encrypted, with video analyzed on the home hub. Apple’s Platform Security guide, published February 18, 2021, says: “HomeKit provides an end-to-end secure and private mechanism to record, analyze, and view clips from HomeKit IP cameras without exposing that video content to Apple or any third party.” It describes local clip analysis, encryption before upload, and local decryption when clips are viewed. That guide is dated 2021, so it should not be taken as documentation of every implementation detail introduced in iOS 27. Read Apple’s HomeKit camera security guide for its architecture explanation.
