To look for a hidden spy app on an iPhone, check three places in Settings: the apps installed on the phone, the management profiles under VPN & Device Management, and the sharing and account access controls in Safety Check. These checks can expose unfamiliar apps, unexpected permissions, or management settings you did not set up. They cannot certify that a phone is free of spyware. If the phone shows an Apple threat notification, that is a more serious situation and needs a different response, covered below.

Work through the checks in this order

1. Look through the installed apps

Scroll through the Home Screen, the App Library, and the app list under Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Look for apps you do not recognize, particularly ones with generic or unhelpful names. Apple notes that VPN and third-party security apps can have varied names, so search for them with Spotlight by swiping down on the Home Screen and typing the name. Apple’s guidance on this is in its network connectivity troubleshooting article.

2. Check for management profiles

Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If no profiles are listed, Apple says no device management profiles are installed. A profile can be legitimate: an employer or school may use one to configure VPN access or other services. Apple’s guide to reviewing and deleting configuration profiles explains how to inspect each one. Ask the organization that issued a profile before you remove it, because removal deletes the settings, apps, and data associated with it.

3. Turn on App Privacy Report

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. On iOS 15.2 or later, the report shows how often and when apps accessed sensitive data and sensors, along with their network activity. It begins recording only after you turn it on. Its data is encrypted and stored on the device. If you suspect a problem, look for apps that accessed the microphone, camera, location, or network at times when you were not using them. See Apple’s explanation of App Privacy Report for the full list of what it records.

4. Review sharing and account access in Safety Check

On iOS 16 or later, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Tap Manage Sharing & Access to review the people and apps you share with, and to change those settings one at a time. Emergency Reset stops sharing broadly and quickly. Also review the devices signed in to your Apple Account and the permissions granted to each app. Apple’s Safety Check guide for iOS 16 or later describes each option.

Which iOS version you need

Two of the checks depend on the iOS version. The profile review does not have a version requirement in Apple’s guide.

Check Minimum iOS Where to find it What it shows Key limit
Safety Check iOS 16 or later Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check Sharing, account access, and app permissions, with Manage Sharing & Access and Emergency Reset Does not review every non-Apple account or every sharing source; Screen Time or device management can limit some features
App Privacy Report iOS 15.2 or later Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report Sensitive data and sensor access, plus network activity, for the past seven days Records only after activation; not a full historical malware scan
Configuration profiles Not stated in Apple’s profile guide Settings > General > VPN & Device Management Any device management profiles installed on the phone A profile can be legitimate, and removing one deletes its settings, apps, and data

What these checks can and cannot tell you

  • An unfamiliar app or profile is a lead, not a verdict. Many legitimate utilities look unfamiliar, and many employer or school profiles are legitimate.
  • App Privacy Report only shows what it has recorded since you turned it on. A quiet week tells you about that week, not the months before it.
  • Safety Check reviews the sharing and account controls it covers. It is not a scan of every account, device, or route by which someone could watch you.
  • A clean review covers only the specific controls you inspected. It does not establish that the device has never been compromised.

If you received an Apple threat notification

An Apple threat notification is different from a general privacy check. Apple’s wording is that these alerts are “high-confidence alerts that a user has been individually targeted by a mercenary spyware attack, and should be taken very seriously.” Apple’s page on Apple threat notifications and mercenary spyware was updated on 13 August 2026. Take these steps:

  • Verify the notification. Do not click a link in the message. Sign in directly at account.apple.com and check for the alert there. Genuine notifications do not ask for your password or verification code, request that you click a link, or tell you to install an app or profile.
  • Update the device to the latest iOS version.
  • Consider Lockdown Mode. Apple says users with good reason to believe they are targeted can turn it on in Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode.
  • Get expert help. Apple points notified users to Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline.

If someone may be monitoring you

Plan for your safety before changing settings or deleting anything. Removing a profile, revoking access, or resetting the phone may tell the person that you have noticed, and that can raise the risk. Apple’s additional safety steps guide covers this. The Federal Trade Commission advises that if stalkerware may be present, you contact a domestic violence advocate or law enforcement from a device the monitor cannot access. Its guidance is in Stalkerware: What To Know.

Before you erase the iPhone

A factory reset erases all data and apps on the device. Apple’s Personal Safety guide says to review Safety Check before you erase. If you are erasing because you believe the device was tampered with and had malicious software installed, Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide says: “don’t restore from a backup.” Restoring a backup can reinstall the software you are trying to remove. Decide first what you need to keep, such as messages, photos, or records that may matter later, and consider talking to a trusted expert before you reset.

Advanced spyware and specialist help

Battery drain, warm casings, or a list of symptoms online are not a reliable test for spyware, and no consumer app can settle the question. Amnesty International’s Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) supports consensual forensic analysis of iOS and Android devices. Amnesty states that it is intended for technologists and investigators, not for self-assessment by users. Amnesty’s Security Lab help page noted that public forensic support requests were temporarily unavailable as of 2 April 2025, so check current availability before relying on it.
