You can watch TV shows legally without adding a paid subscription by using official, ad-supported services such as Tubi, Plex, and The Roku Channel. Open the service through its official app or website, find a show in its catalog or channel guide, and check the exact program’s access label before pressing play. A free app may also offer paid titles or episodes that require a TV-provider login.

What “free” means on a streaming service

Free, legal streaming is commonly funded by advertising rather than a monthly subscription. Tubi says it is “a 100% free, 100% legal streaming service” and explains that short ad breaks support programming from studio and independent partners. See the Tubi Help Center’s explanation of its free service. Plex likewise describes its on-demand TV and movies and its internet Live TV as free and ad-supported; details are in Plex: Free vs Paid and its Live TV overview.

“Free” does not necessarily apply to every title inside an app. A show, season, or episode may be marked as premium, available to rent, or locked behind a cable or satellite provider sign-in. The service’s current listing for the exact episode is the useful check—not just the app’s name or a search result.

Choose the kind of viewing you want

Viewing mode How it works Best for
On-demand Choose a listed show or episode and start it when you want; free catalogs may include ad breaks. Watching a particular program or episode on your own schedule.
Live internet channels Choose from scheduled channels; programming follows the channel lineup rather than starting with a specific episode. Browsing or watching whatever is currently on.
Over-the-air TV through an antenna A compatible tuner and antenna connected to a Plex server can bring in local broadcasts. Plex says recording this way requires Plex Pass. Receiving local broadcast channels, rather than browsing a streaming service’s internet catalog.

Plex offers both on-demand programming and internet-streamed live channels. Its internet Live TV does not require a tuner or antenna; those are only relevant to the separate over-the-air setup. The distinction is described in Plex’s Live TV overview and Plex: Free vs Paid.

Find shows through official services and app stores

  1. Start with a device you already own. Check its official app store, or visit the streaming service’s official website. Tubi lists access through web, Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xfinity X1, Xbox, Samsung and Sony smart TVs, and PlayStation on its service page. Check the local app listing because supported devices and catalogs may vary.
  2. Browse the service’s TV catalog or channel guide. For on-demand viewing, search for the show and select the episode. For live viewing, browse the channel lineup and schedule. These are different ways to watch, even when the same service offers both.
  3. On Roku, use its free-content discovery path. Roku documents the path as Streaming Channels > Top Free; select a channel to inspect its details and add it. This finds channels, not a guarantee that every program inside each channel is free. See Roku’s “How do I find free movies and TV shows?” guide.
  4. Open the exact program and read its access information. Check the episode, season, or title for a free, subscription, rental, premium, or provider-login label before playback.
  5. Expect ads where the service says its free catalog is ad-supported. Tubi and Plex both identify advertising as the funding model for the free programming described above.

Check access, devices, and your country

Verify the title and any sign-in requirement

Some network apps offer extra content to people who authenticate with an existing cable or satellite subscription. Roku notes that the network controls which shows and episodes are available, so a provider login may unlock some programming while other episodes remain unavailable. Its guide to cable or satellite subscription content explains this distinction. An app being free to install is not proof that the program you want is free to watch.

Confirm the app works where you live

Device support and geographic availability are separate questions: a service may support a device family but not offer the same app or catalog in every country. Roku’s support page says The Roku Channel offers live channels, Roku Originals, free TV shows, and movies, and reports 500+ live channels on the service. It lists access on Roku streaming devices, compatible Samsung TVs, compatible Amazon Fire TV devices, web, and mobile. Its stated markets are the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom on Roku devices, web, and mobile, and Mexico on Roku devices only. Because availability can change, confirm the current listing for your country and device on Roku’s How to get The Roku Channel page, last updated June 23, 2026.

If an app is missing, check the device maker’s official store and the service’s current support page before buying a streaming player. A Roku device is optional if you already have another supported phone, computer, smart TV, console, or streaming player. Plex lists player apps including Fire TV, Android TV and mobile, Apple TV, Chromecast, iOS, Roku, smart TVs, web, Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox in its Live TV overview.

Use official sources and avoid risky “free” streams

Install apps from an official device app store and reach services through their official sites. Be wary of third-party video pages that ask you to install an unsolicited APK, disable device protections, or use a VPN to reach an unofficial library. Tubi specifically warns about unsafe free-streaming sites and says its app does not require a VPN; that is Tubi’s guidance about its own service, not a universal legal test. See the Tubi Help Center.

When unsure, leave the listing and verify the same title in the official app. Do not enter payment details or provider credentials on a page you cannot confirm belongs to the service or your TV provider.
