Start with the official UK broadcaster players: BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 streaming and 5. Use Freeview Play or the Freeview app to discover programmes across several services, then confirm the title in the player that hosts it. “Free” can mean adverts, and BBC iPlayer use requires a TV Licence; the exact programme catalogue changes over time.
Which free streaming services should you check?
Broadcaster services are the best first stop for British sitcoms, panel shows and comedy box sets. Search each service’s current listings: a programme’s past availability does not guarantee it is still there.

| BBC iPlayer | BBC programmes are available online, including comedy. | You need a TV Licence to use BBC iPlayer, including for on-demand programmes. |
| ITVX | ITV offers comedy in a free tier supported by adverts, as well as a paid ad-free subscription. | Choose the free option if you do not want a subscription; expect adverts. |
| Channel 4 streaming | As announced by Channel 4 on 6 January 2026, its streaming service also carries UKTV’s U catalogue alongside Channel 4 programmes. | Check the current listing in Channel 4 streaming or U; programme availability can change. |
| 5 | 5 says the shows it offers, including archive programmes, are free to watch while they remain available. Its help statement was updated 25 February 2025. | Search the current catalogue; this does not mean every past Channel 5 programme is available. |
| Freeview Play and Freeview app | Freeview helps viewers discover programmes across players and promotes comedy box sets. | Use it as a search and discovery layer, then check which service hosts the programme and whether your device supports that player. |
How to find a particular sitcom or comedy show
- Search the broadcaster most likely to have it. Try BBC iPlayer for BBC programmes, ITVX for ITV programmes, Channel 4 streaming for Channel 4 and U listings, and 5 for shows in its catalogue.
- Use Freeview for broader discovery. Search in Freeview Play on a compatible television or through the Freeview app. Its player links and availability can differ by device.
- Check the destination service itself. Confirm that the exact programme, series or episode is listed now, and note whether it is on a free ad-supported tier or behind a paid option.
- Check viewing and setup requirements. Confirm device compatibility and, if watching live or using BBC iPlayer, whether a TV Licence is required.
Channel 4’s 6 January 2026 announcement named The Office, Red Dwarf, QI XL, Birds of a Feather, Not Going Out, Mock the Week and David Mitchell’s Outsiders as examples associated with the UKTV U catalogue on Channel 4 streaming. These are examples from that announcement, not a guarantee that each title remains available; check the live listing before watching.
What “free” means—and when a TV Licence is needed
A service can offer programmes without a separate per-title charge but still have conditions. ITVX’s free tier includes adverts, while ITVX also offers a paid ad-free subscription. 5 says the programmes it offers are free for as long as they remain available. In either case, verify the individual programme and the selected viewing option.
#1 Best Overall
GOV.UK says a TV Licence is required to watch or record live TV on any channel or service and to use BBC iPlayer, including for on-demand BBC programmes. Its guidance distinguishes this from on-demand viewing through services such as All 4, which does not by itself require a TV Licence. Do not assume that a free service makes every way of watching licence-free: live broadcasts and BBC iPlayer have specific rules.
Will Freeview or the players work on your device?
Freeview says player availability can vary by device. Its television platform’s availability also depends on location and coverage, and some setups may need an aerial upgrade and/or a receiver. Freeview states that catch-up and on-demand viewing requires a minimum broadband speed of 2 Mbps; streaming also uses data from your monthly allowance.
Rank #2
You do not need to buy a television to watch online: use a compatible phone, tablet, computer or laptop where the relevant player is available. If you want Freeview Play on a television, check the device and reception requirements before buying or changing equipment.
Why listings change
Streaming rights and catalogue windows move, so no service’s comedy selection should be treated as permanent. Ofcom reported that BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 streaming and My5 together had 65,923 catalogue hours in May 2024, 47% more than in May 2022. That is a historical combined catalogue measure, not a comedy-only count or a measure of what is available in 2026. Ofcom also reported 15,832 hours in ITVX’s free-to-view catalogue in May 2024.
Rank #3
For a useful search, compare the current listing, the hosting broadcaster, whether adverts or payment apply, device support and any TV Licence requirement. The title’s presence in an old list or announcement is not a substitute for checking its destination player.
