This checklist covers the Link’s Awakening Nintendo Switch remake: all 32 Heart Pieces and all 50 Secret Seashells. The Game Boy releases have different totals—12 Heart Pieces and 26 shells—so don’t use the Switch counts for those versions. Four Heart Pieces make one Heart Container. Follow the approximate progression below, then use the linked numbered guides and maps for exact routes and prerequisites.
Switch remake counts and how to use this checklist
The Nintendo Switch remake contains 32 Heart Pieces and 50 Secret Seashells. The original Game Boy versions have 12 Heart Pieces and 26 shells, according to Zelda’s Palace’s cross-version count guide. Nintendo Life’s Heart Piece guide and Secret Seashell guide are specifically for the Switch remake and include maps with numbered locations. Their ordering is a practical route, not a strict sequence: some collectibles can be reached earlier depending on your items and choices.
Use the checklists here to identify what becomes available around each story milestone. For directions through caves, Rapids Ride routes, and Dampé’s challenges, open the matching numbered entry on the relevant map rather than relying on the landmark name alone.
All 32 Heart Pieces, in approximate progression order
The location guide is organized around item and story progression. Several locations are gated by the Roc’s Feather, Power Bracelet, Pegasus Boots, Flippers, or Hookshot.

Before Tail Cave: Heart Pieces 1–5
- Win a Heart Piece at the Trendy Game.
- Check the Mabe Village Tool Shop.
- Catch a small fish at the Mabe Village Fishing Hole.
- Catch a large fish at the Mabe Village Fishing Hole.
- Find the piece in the northwest Mabe Village well; you need the Sword.
After Tail Cave and the Roc’s Feather: 6–7
- Search the circle of pits in Koholint Prairie.
- Search the line of pits in Tabahl Wasteland.
After Bottle Grotto and the Power Bracelet: 8–12
- Explore the cave in Mysterious Forest.
- Explore the cave in Ukuku Prairie.
- Claim the Heart Piece awarded at Seashell Mansion for 5 shells.
- Search Pothole Field behind Richard’s Villa.
- Explore the cave network in Tal Tal Mountain Range.
After Key Cavern and the Pegasus Boots: 13–18
- Win the second Trendy Game Heart Piece.
- Complete Dampé’s tier-one “Fill Up Your Hearts” challenge.
- Search the cemetery cave.
- Explore the cave behind black barriers in Ukuku Prairie.
- Search behind the houses in Animal Village.
- Bomb the wall in Lanmola’s lair in Yarna Desert.
After Angler’s Tunnel and the Flippers: 19–23
- Explore the flooded cave at Tal Tal Heights.
- Search the Kanalet Castle moat.
- Explore the tunnel between Ukuku Prairie and Animal Village.
- Search the flooded tunnel in southwest Martha’s Bay.
- Dive in the southern Martha’s Bay waters.
After Catfish’s Maw and the Hookshot: 24–31
- Complete Dampé’s Tier Two challenges.
- Search the Mysterious Forest cave.
- Find one of the two Rapids Ride/raft-shop pickups.
- Find the other Rapids Ride/raft-shop pickup.
- Finish the Rapids Race in under 40 seconds.
- Follow the cave and chasm route in Animal Village.
- Search one location in Western Tal Tal Mountain Range.
- Search the other location in Western Tal Tal Mountain Range.
Late game: Heart Piece 32
- Find the Heart Piece on the peak outside Level 8, Turtle Rock. Reach it from a room inside the dungeon.

All 50 Secret Seashells
Shells are spread across the island and use different acquisition methods. As you explore, check grass and bushes, lift rocks, dig with the Shovel, bomb cracked walls, open chests, complete trading-sequence deliveries, fish, dive with the Flippers, use the Hookshot, and inspect dungeon side paths. The Rapids Ride also has exploration and race rewards.

The Switch Secret Seashell guide provides the full 1–50 numbered route and map. Its named landmarks include Mabe Village, the Trendy Game, CiaoCiao’s kennel, Mysterious Forest, Tornobo Shores, Koholint Prairie, Tail Cave, Tabahl Wasteland, Goponga Swamp, Ukuku Prairie, Martha’s Bay, Seashell Mansion, Richard’s underground passage, Kanalet Castle, the Fishing Hole, Animal Village, Rapids Ride, Ancient Ruins, Face Shrine, and Western Tal Tal Mountain Range. Follow its numbered entries for the exact location and prerequisites for each shell.

- An early shell is hidden in grass in eastern Mabe Village.
- Another Trendy Game shell becomes available after you have the Yoshi Doll and the first Heart Piece.
- Use the Shovel in CiaoCiao’s kennel to uncover a shell.
- Tail Cave has a shell behind a bombable wall.
- The second Trendy Game shell, Christine’s reward after you deliver the Goat’s Letter, and a Cheep Cheep caught at the Fishing Hole after Catfish’s Maw are later pickups.
- Later routes include Rapids Ride exploration and race prizes, and a shell from a friendly Zora after you acquire the Magnifying Lens.

The Seashell Sensor sounds when Link is within five or six tiles of a shell, according to the guide. The Koholint Sword replaces the ordinary Sword, deals increased damage, and fires a beam when Link has full health. Nintendo’s Play Nintendo tips also describe the broad Seashell Mansion and Sensor mechanics.

The 32nd Heart Piece is on Turtle Rock’s peak outside Level 8, but its access route starts inside the dungeon. For the final Heart Container, complete Dampé’s first 11 challenges and then finish the twelfth and final Tier Three dungeon after Turtle Rock.
