Connect the headphones or speaker you want to use before checking codec choices. The exact menu path and available controls vary by device.
Enable Developer options
On Android 4.2 and later, Developer options must be enabled before it appears. Android’s Developer options guide notes that menu names and locations can differ by device.
- Open Settings. Find Build number; try Settings search if you do not see it. It is commonly under About phone, though some manufacturers place it inside Software information.
- Tap Build number seven times. If prompted, enter your device PIN or pattern. Android displays a confirmation when Developer options is enabled.
- Return to the previous screen and look for Developer options. Its location or name may vary; if needed, search Settings for it.
For example, Android’s guide gives Settings > About phone > Build number for Pixel and Settings > About phone > Software information > Build number for Samsung Galaxy S8 and later. These are examples, not universal paths.
Find and change the Bluetooth audio controls
In Developer options, look for the Bluetooth audio settings. Android’s guide lists Bluetooth AVRCP version, Bluetooth Audio Codec, codec enable/disable choices, Bluetooth Audio Sample Range, Bluetooth Audio Bits Per sample, Bluetooth Audio Channel Mode, and Bluetooth Audio LDAC Codec. Not every phone exposes every control, and available choices can depend on the connected audio device.

- Connect the headphones or speaker you intend to use. Some phones show a connection-specific codec selection only while an audio device is connected.
- Open the relevant Bluetooth audio setting and select an option that is available for both devices. Change one setting at a time.
- Play audio and check whether sound and connection remain stable. If a setting is unavailable, has no useful effect, or makes playback unstable, restore its default or choose a supported, connection-priority option.
What each setting does
Bluetooth Audio Codec
This selects among codecs the phone and connected audio device can use. Android lists SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC as examples, not a promise that every phone supports them. The BluetoothCodecConfig API reference describes codec types as reflecting source-device hardware support. Android’s guide also notes that optional codecs may need to be installed or enabled. A missing or greyed-out codec can therefore reflect device or software compatibility, not a setting you have overlooked.
Bluetooth Audio Sample Range
This selects a sample rate for the codec. Android cautions that higher sample rates use more resources; selecting a higher number does not guarantee an audible improvement.

Bluetooth Audio Bits Per sample
This sets how many bits are used for each audio sample. More bits affect the amount of audio data represented, but the setting alone does not guarantee better perceived sound over a Bluetooth connection.
Bluetooth Audio Channel Mode
This selects mono or stereo output where those modes are available.

Bluetooth Audio LDAC Codec
When LDAC is available, Android provides choices that prioritize audio quality, balance audio and connection quality, prioritize connection quality, or adapt bitrate to balance the two. Choose according to your listening conditions: a quality-priority mode may be less suitable where the connection is unreliable, while a connection-priority choice favors stability.
Bluetooth AVRCP version
AVRCP is a Bluetooth profile version for controlling audio/video equipment, rather than a sound-quality setting. If you are trying to change how audio sounds, focus first on codec and, when available, LDAC options.

Troubleshoot missing, reverted, or unstable options
- Developer options is missing: Confirm that you tapped Build number seven times and returned to Settings. If it is still not visible, search Settings; the manufacturer may place or label it differently.
- A codec is absent or greyed out: Availability depends on the phone’s hardware and Android build, the connected headphones or speaker, and supported or enabled codec implementations. Installing an arbitrary codec app cannot be assumed to add hardware support.
- Your selection reverts: The devices may negotiate a mutually supported configuration, or the manufacturer’s software may handle the menu differently. Persistence behavior is device-dependent.
- Audio becomes unstable: Restore the default codec or quality mode, or select a connection-priority LDAC mode if offered.
USB debugging is a separate Developer options control. You do not need to enable it to change the Bluetooth audio settings described here.

Android’s BluetoothCodecConfig and BluetoothLeAudioCodecConfig references describe platform-level codec configuration fields, including sample rate, bits per sample, and channel mode. They explain the underlying concepts, but do not guarantee that a particular phone displays every field or codec in its user interface.
