Start with the National Park Service’s Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Alerts & Conditions page, then check the newest dated closure or reopening notice. Before heading onto a specific route, follow posted trailhead signs and confirm with staff at the Welcome Center: conditions can change, and a dated notice is not a live status feed.
Check the official NPS status before you go
- Open Alerts & Conditions. Use the park’s official conditions hub for current alerts and status information.
- Look for the newest dated notice. A specific park notice may be newer than the conditions page’s displayed update date. Compare publication dates before relying on a closure list.
- Confirm on site. At the park, follow signs at trailheads and ask staff at the Welcome Center about your intended route. This is especially important for areas whose reopening depends on continuing assessments.
For general questions, NPS lists (808) 985-6011. The contact page says the phone is not staffed regularly and directs visitors to current-conditions information for the most up-to-date status.
Closures in the latest located NPS notice
The latest located closure notice is dated September 27, 2026. After Hurricane Nolo, NPS said most areas along the Kīlauea summit and in the Kahuku Unit had reopened. It listed these remaining closures around Kīlauea and Mauna Loa:
Recommended Free Tools
- Hilina Pali Road beyond the Mauna Iki trailhead
- Mauna Loa Road beyond the second cattleguard
- Kīpukapuaulu Trail
- Sulphur Banks Bridge
The notice said Kahuku trails would open as staff completed assessments; it did not say every Kahuku trail was already open. These details describe the notice as published, not guaranteed current status. Check the September 27 NPS reopening notice alongside newer updates and on-site information.

Check trail conditions as well as closure status
The September 27 notice warned hikers about potential overhead hanging branches, loose rocks, and uneven terrain. Even if a route is listed as open, heed trailhead signs and ask Welcome Center staff about conditions before setting out.
