For a 24/7 YouTube stream in India, the lowest-ambiguity choices are music you created yourself or tracks from YouTube’s Audio Library used under their stated terms. For someone else’s bhajan, kirtan or other devotional recording, get written permission from the relevant rights holders that expressly covers India, continuous YouTube livestreaming, monetization and any replay or later hosting. Giving credit, buying a CD, finding a “free” label or seeing no Content ID claim does not establish that permission.

Why devotional music still needs track-by-track clearance

“Devotional” describes a song’s subject, not its copyright status. A recording may involve separate rights in the sound recording and in the underlying musical composition and lyrics. A traditional or public-domain melody does not automatically make a modern arrangement, performance or recording free to use.

YouTube Help defines safe music as “music that is in the public domain or music that you have received permission to use from the copyright owner.” That is a rights question, separate from whether YouTube’s Content ID system detects a track. Content ID may identify material that a creator has permission to use, and a track described as free may still be claimed. Keep the license and track-level evidence, and follow YouTube’s claim-dispute process if a properly licensed track is claimed.

Choose a source whose terms fit a continuous livestream

Before adding music to a stream, compare the source’s actual terms against the use you intend. A license for ordinary uploads, short-form video, or a one-time event may not authorize continuous looping. YouTube recommends its Audio Library, original music, Creator Music where available under its terms, and third-party libraries only after checking their licenses.

#1 Best Overall
Music source What to check for a 24/7 stream
Your own original music Confirm that you control or have permission for every contribution, including performances, lyrics, composition and the recording. If another person performed, wrote or arranged part of it, clarify those rights in writing.
YouTube Audio Library Check the specific track’s current terms and any attribution requirement. Make sure the terms cover continuous livestreaming and any monetization or replay you plan.
Creator Music, where available Use only under the terms shown for the specific track and your account. Confirm that the permitted use includes a continuous live stream, India, monetization and any archive or repackaging.
Third-party library, label or independent rights holder Read the track-specific license. If it does not expressly address livestreaming, 24/7 or looped use, India, monetization, VOD and Content ID claims, ask the licensor for written clarification before launch.

Clear the recording and the underlying work

For a commercial devotional recording, identify who controls the recording and who controls the composition and lyrics. Those may be different people or organizations, and one permission may not clear both. Ask the label or recording owner about digital streaming rights, and check separately who can authorize the musical and literary works.

IPRS explains that its licenses cover public performance and communication to the public, including streaming, for works in the repertoire it controls. That does not necessarily clear the sound recording or every work in a song. IPRS also states that buying a copy of a recording does not itself grant a public-performance right. Ask IPRS whether the relevant composition or lyrics are in its repertoire and what its permission covers; seek separate permission from the recording owner when needed.

Do not treat a venue or public-performance license as online-streaming clearance. PPL India says its cited on-ground license does not authorize digital usage, including online streaming; its FAQ says it does not issue virtual-use licenses and directs users to individual labels. Check the current scope of any license you hold and obtain digital permission from the relevant rights holders.

Use this clearance workflow before going live

  1. Inventory every track and version. Record the song title, version or arrangement, recording, lyric and composition credits, source, and the rights holders you have identified. Note whether the channel will carry ads, sponsorships, donations or an archived replay; each can matter to the permission you need.
  2. Select a source route. Prefer your own music or a suitable YouTube Audio Library track. For a library, label or other third party, locate the license for the exact track. Ask for written clarification wherever a relevant use—such as continuous looping, India, monetization or VOD—is not explicit.
  3. Confirm each rights layer. Verify permission for the sound recording and for the composition and lyrics. If an organization such as IPRS is involved, establish that the work is in its controlled repertoire and identify rights it does not cover.
  4. Get terms you can use and keep. Preserve written permission, the license version, receipts and correspondence. The terms should identify the tracks, permitted channels and platforms, territories, dates, live and recorded uses, looping, edits, monetization and replay rights. Ask how a Content ID claim will be handled and whether the licensor can release a claim for your channel or stream.
  5. Test the intended setup where the license allows it. Run a private or unlisted test with the intended tracks and check YouTube Studio for copyright notices. A clean test is not proof of clearance and cannot guarantee that a later claim will not arise.
  6. Keep an audit folder and update it when the stream changes. Store track metadata, permissions, receipts, correspondence and claim-release instructions together. Recheck rights when you replace a track or start archiving, clipping or repackaging the stream.

Do not rely on the religious-ceremony exception without advice

Section 52(1)(za) of India’s Copyright Act includes an exception for certain performances or communications of works or recordings in the course of a bona fide religious ceremony. The Copyright Office’s official exceptions listing uses that wording. It does not establish that a permanent online music channel, or a stream with separate entertainment or monetization elements, qualifies. Whether the exception applies depends on the facts; seek advice from a qualified Indian copyright professional before relying on it.

Or let it run in the cloud

Once you have cleared the music, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream of uploaded videos running without leaving a computer or home connection on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material; it does not clear music rights, and a StreamNeo setup does not replace the permissions described above.
