To find campaign contributions connected to cannabis businesses, search the official campaign-finance records for the election in question: use the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for federal races and the relevant state agency for state and local races. Federal filings can be searched by candidate, committee, contributor, or filing; state systems and disclosure rules vary by jurisdiction. Neither system necessarily labels a record “cannabis,” so verify the filing and the reported contributor details before describing a contribution as cannabis-connected.
Start by identifying the election and jurisdiction
The FEC administers campaign-finance law for U.S. House, Senate, presidential, and vice-presidential campaigns. Its records do not provide a complete national source for state and local contributions. For a state legislative, gubernatorial, municipal, or ballot-measure election, use the agency responsible for campaign-finance filings in that state.
The FEC’s Combined Federal/State Disclosure and Election Directory is an official starting point for locating state offices that maintain candidate reports and other disclosures. Confirm the relevant office and its current instructions for the jurisdiction you are researching.

- Search the FEC database. Use the FEC campaign-finance data service to look up a candidate, committee, contributor, or filing. The service also provides candidate and committee profiles and contribution searches.
- Open the underlying report and transaction details. Federal committees file periodic reports disclosing receipts and disbursements. Check the actual filing and the relevant transaction rather than relying only on an aggregate total or a name-only search result.
- Check identifying fields when they are reported. For an individual giving more than $200 to a campaign during an election cycle, federal reports list the contributor’s name, address, occupation, and employer. For contributions to PACs and party committees, the corresponding accounting period is the calendar year. The FEC says disclosure reports are made available online within 48 hours of receipt; that is the stated availability period, not a guarantee that every record is immediately searchable in every view.
- Trace the kind of activity you mean. If the question is whether a candidate received money, distinguish contributions and committee transfers from independent expenditures or communications. The FEC’s candidate and committee research guides cover different records and activities.
Find state and local records
Use the state office identified for the relevant jurisdiction, then search its official database or filing archive for the candidate, committee, contributor, or ballot-measure committee. State rules, reporting thresholds, deadlines, covered entities, search fields, and download options are not uniform. Do not assume that a federal threshold, reporting schedule, or search interface applies to state filings.

- Enough forms for 1 year for churches of approximately 150 members
- 5 3/16" x 9"
- Includes forms for church receipts, member contributions, and disbursements
For comparisons across states, check each agency’s current rules and records for:
- When a contribution must be itemized and what threshold applies.
- Filing deadlines, amendments, and how quickly updates appear.
- Available donor fields and whether transaction-level data can be downloaded.
- Which committees and activities are covered, such as candidate committees, PACs, ballot-measure committees, or independent expenditures.
- Any rules governing the use of contributor information.
Decide whether a record is actually cannabis-connected
The cited federal materials do not describe a standard “cannabis donor” field. A cannabis connection therefore needs to be established from the record and supporting identifying details, not inferred from a name match alone. Start with a defined connection—such as a named cannabis company, trade association, or disclosed cannabis-related occupation—and verify the complete filing and transaction.

Keep different types of activity distinct: an employee’s personal contribution is not the same as a corporate treasury contribution, a PAC contribution, a committee transfer, or an independent expenditure. The available fields may help identify a contributor or employer, but they do not establish that an employer entry is always complete or that an industry match is conclusive.
Use public records carefully
A campaign-finance filing documents reported activity; by itself, it does not show why a contribution was made or prove that it caused a policy decision. Describe what the record supports—for example, the reported contributor, amount, recipient, filing, and disclosed occupation or employer—rather than asserting motive or influence without separate evidence.

The FEC says individual contributor information in its reports may not be used to solicit contributions, including political or charitable contributions, or for commercial purposes. Review applicable restrictions before reusing contributor data.

For analysis across many transactions, the FEC provides search tools and a data catalog with transaction-level information and downloadable bulk files. The catalog describes update schedules ranging from daily to weekly, depending on the file. Record the date of your query or download and check the relevant file’s coverage and update schedule before treating the data as current. The catalog also links to related reporting systems for information reported to other agencies.
