What to look for in a screenshot MCP server
GitHub has repositories that let an AI assistant control a browser, take screenshots, or do both. A repository’s name alone does not tell you which kind it is. Before installing one, check the scope of its tools, how it captures pages, what client configuration it documents, and how it handles browser installation and security.
- Scope: A general browser-automation server can navigate, inspect, and interact with pages in addition to taking screenshots. A focused server may expose a smaller set of browser and capture actions.
- Capture controls: Look for viewport and full-page capture, element targeting, wait conditions, image format, and output scaling.
- Interaction model: A screenshot gives you pixels; an accessibility snapshot gives you structured page information and references for acting on controls. Prefer the latter for finding buttons and fields.
- Installation: Check the required runtime, package command, client configuration format, and whether a browser binary must be installed separately.
- Trust and maintenance: Review the license, recent activity, dependency changes, security or issue-reporting path, and issue responsiveness. These signals can change, so check the repository itself before adopting it.
Useful GitHub search phrases include MCP screenshot Playwright, browser_take_screenshot MCP, Model Context Protocol browser screenshot, and MCP server fullPage screenshot. Treat search results as a shortlist, not a quality ranking: inspect each project’s README and tool documentation before running it.

Microsoft Playwright MCP: the general-purpose starting point
Microsoft describes microsoft/playwright-mcp as “A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides browser automation capabilities using Playwright.” It is a strong starting choice when you need the assistant to browse and interact with a site as well as capture it. Its documented screenshot tool can capture a viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page.

meirroth/mcp-browser-screenshot: a focused alternative
The meirroth/mcp-browser-screenshot README describes an MCP server that lets AI assistants take browser screenshots using Playwright. Its documented tools are browser_screenshot, browser_click, browser_type, and browser_eval. The screenshot options include a URL, width, height, fullPage, a CSS selector, and an optional wait selector. This is a narrower documented tool surface than Playwright MCP’s general browser automation, so compare the projects’ current maintenance, browser coverage, security posture, and issue response rather than assuming the smaller project is a drop-in replacement.
These are two options, not a claim that they are the only screenshot MCP servers on GitHub. Package commands, client support, and repository status are volatile; confirm the current README and documentation before installation.
Install Microsoft Playwright MCP
The official Playwright MCP getting-started guide lists Node.js 20 or newer as a prerequisite. The basic server entry uses npx to run the current @playwright/mcp package. How you reach the MCP settings differs by client; the JSON below is the server configuration pattern documented by the project.
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
- Install or update Node.js. Use Node.js 20 or newer, then confirm your terminal can run
node --versionandnpx --version. - Open your MCP client’s server settings. Add the JSON entry using that client’s documented configuration file or its MCP add-server command. The exact file location and UI labels vary by client and can change.
- Save and reload the client. Restart it or use its reload action so it starts the configured server and discovers its tools.
- Check the tool list. Confirm the Playwright browser tools are available before asking for a capture. If the server does not appear, see the troubleshooting section below.
- Ask the assistant to navigate, wait, and capture. Specify the page, the condition that indicates it is ready, and whether you need the viewport, one element, or the full page.
For advanced browser options, context options, network rules, and timeouts, Playwright MCP also documents a configuration-file mode. Its command pattern is npx @playwright/mcp@latest --config path/to/config.json; use the project’s current configuration documentation to build that file rather than guessing option names.

The README says to install Playwright’s Chromium browser after the first run with:
npx playwright install chromium
That separate browser installation is important: installing the MCP package does not, by itself, guarantee the browser binary is present. Follow the repository’s latest instructions for your operating system and client. Do not assume this configuration works unchanged in every MCP client; its documented example specifically names VS Code/Copilot.
Take a screenshot with Playwright MCP
Once the server is running, tell the assistant what to capture and what condition to wait for. For example:
Navigate to the dashboard, wait for the
[data-testid="dashboard"]element, then take a full-page WebP screenshot nameddashboard.webp.
The Playwright screenshot tool documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Its target option can identify an element; fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page; and scale can be css for CSS-pixel dimensions or device for high-resolution output. Use the tool’s documented parameter names and verify the returned image or file in your client, since the way an MCP client presents image results can vary.

Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: Use the default visible page area when checking what a user sees without scrolling.
- Element: Target a specific component when the rest of the page is irrelevant. First locate it from the snapshot or a stable selector, then request the element capture.
- Full page: Set
fullPage: truewhen you need the scrollable page in one image. Long pages can produce large screenshots; if image size or processing is a concern, capture only the section you need.
Choose format and scale
Pick PNG, JPEG, or WebP according to the downstream use and what your MCP client accepts. The available scale choices distinguish CSS-pixel sizing from device-scale output; use CSS scale for layout-oriented review and device scale when higher-resolution pixels matter. Do not compare captures at different scales as if they had the same pixel dimensions.
Wait for the page you actually need
A page can be navigated to before its important content has rendered. Name a meaningful selector in your request when one is available, rather than relying on an arbitrary pause. For a page whose content is driven by scripts or delayed requests, inspect the result and adjust the wait condition if the capture is incomplete.

Use accessibility snapshots for actions and screenshots for visual checks
Playwright MCP can use an accessibility tree that represents page content through structured roles, labels, and text. That makes it useful for locating controls and obtaining references for actions without guessing at coordinates from an image. The Playwright screenshot documentation puts the distinction succinctly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.”
Use browser_snapshot to inspect page structure, find a button or field, and interact with it. Use a screenshot to verify visual layout, inspect content that is primarily visual (such as a chart or canvas), or document a visual bug. The two views complement one another: the snapshot helps the assistant act on the page, while the screenshot helps it assess appearance.
When to use the smaller screenshot server
Choose mcp-browser-screenshot when its documented actions and capture controls cover the job and a focused tool surface suits your workflow. Choose Playwright MCP when you want its broader browser-automation approach and official client setup guidance. Before making the choice for a team or a persistent workflow, inspect both repositories’ current license, activity, dependency posture, security reporting, and browser or session coverage. A README’s existence or a successful first launch alone is not evidence of long-term maintenance or suitability for sensitive pages.

Troubleshoot common installation and capture problems
The server does not appear in the MCP client
- Check that the JSON is valid and placed in the configuration file or settings area your specific client uses.
- Confirm the server name, command, and argument array are nested under the client’s expected configuration key; the documented examples differ between the two projects.
- Reload or restart the client after saving the entry. Look at the client’s MCP logs for startup errors if the tools remain missing.
npx fails or reports a runtime problem
- Check that Node.js 20 or newer is installed and available to the same user or process that launches the MCP client.
- Run
node --versionandnpx --versionin a terminal. If they work there but not in the client, check whether the client inherits a different PATH or environment. - Recheck the package name and command against the project’s current setup guide; package availability and instructions can change.
The focused server starts but cannot launch Chromium
Install the browser binary as its README directs: npx playwright install chromium. If that fails, consult the current Playwright installation guidance for your platform and inspect the error output for missing system dependencies or download restrictions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or shows a loading state
- Verify that the URL opens in the controlled browser and that any navigation or authentication prerequisite is satisfied.
- Wait for the content’s selector rather than capturing immediately after navigation. For content loaded after interaction, perform the required action before the screenshot.
- Check whether you requested the viewport when the needed content is below the fold; use full-page capture or target the relevant element.
- Inspect the page with an accessibility snapshot to determine whether its content exists in the browser before treating a visual capture as a browser failure.
The tool cannot find or operate the intended control
Take an accessibility snapshot and use the resulting role, label, text, or reference to identify the control. A screenshot is not a reliable substitute for a structured interaction reference; visual position can change with layout, viewport, or page state.
The image is too large or visually different from expectation
Check whether you asked for full-page capture and whether the page is unusually long. Choose the needed scope, output format, and scale explicitly. Compare screenshots only when their viewport, page state, and scaling are alike.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability, security, and cost considerations
Both projects use Playwright, so a capture depends on a browser actually launching, the target page loading, and the page reaching the state you asked for. A screenshot server does not automatically make an unreliable target page reliable. For repeatable work, use a clear readiness condition, record the viewport and capture scope in your prompt or workflow, and inspect failed runs rather than treating an empty image as a valid result.
These are browser-control tools, not just image converters: a server may navigate to pages and, depending on its tools and configuration, interact with them or evaluate JavaScript. Treat access to authenticated sessions, cookies, page content, and network destinations as security-sensitive. Review the code, package dependencies, permissions, configuration, and repository security-reporting process before pointing a third-party server at private systems. Avoid placing credentials in prompts or configuration unless the project’s documented session mechanism and your organization’s policies permit it.

No price or operating-cost figure is established for these GitHub projects in their cited descriptions. Your practical costs may include the machine or CI environment that runs the browser and the time required to maintain dependencies; verify any commercial service or infrastructure charge with its provider rather than inferring it from a repository.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to get a website image or PDF rather than have an agent operate a browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. For a screenshot, the cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. The ScreenshotNeo documentation covers request options. Here are equivalent Python and Node.js request examples:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Can I use a screenshot MCP server to click a button based only on its screenshot?
Use an accessibility snapshot to identify the control and get a reference for interaction; a screenshot is intended for visual inspection, not as the interaction reference.
Does installing an MCP package always install its browser too?
No. The meirroth README specifically calls for installing Chromium with npx playwright install chromium after the first run.
