Start with the official documentation for the API you want to use, then save its tutorial or documentation page as a PDF using the page’s current export option. A general REST tutorial can explain how requests work, but only the target service’s current reference can tell you which endpoint, credentials, parameters, and permissions to use. For a first exercise, choose a small read-only endpoint and follow its documented request from method and path through authentication and response.

Choose a tutorial that matches the API you plan to call

There is no single tutorial PDF that can authoritatively cover every REST API. The common request concepts transfer between services, but endpoint paths, authentication schemes, required permissions, and available operations are service-specific. Use a general guide to learn the shape of a request; use the official reference for the actual API call.

For general request construction: GitHub Docs

GitHub’s REST API guide is a useful general example because it walks through the HTTP method, path, headers, media types, authentication, and parameters. Its examples use GitHub CLI, curl, and JavaScript. The live guide may offer PDF or Markdown export controls; use the current control on the page rather than relying on a presumed permanent PDF download address. GitHub’s documentation states: “Every request to the REST API includes an HTTP method and a path.”

For hands-on API Gateway work: AWS tutorials

If your goal is to build with Amazon API Gateway, AWS maintains an index of REST API tutorials. The exercises cover Lambda or HTTP integrations, private integrations, AWS service integrations, proxy APIs, and creating APIs with SDKs or the CLI. These are platform-specific build-alongs, not a universal introduction. AWS documentation pages surface PDF options, but check the current page’s export control and verify any account, configuration, or cost requirements before doing an exercise.

For a known service: use its own getting-started material

Microsoft Learn’s Azure REST API getting-started material describes constructing requests and obtaining an access token. Salesforce Developers documents Salesforce REST resources, methods, and Bearer authentication. These service guides are better starting points than a generic PDF when you already know which API you need: their details are tied to that provider rather than assumed to apply everywhere.

How to judge a REST API tutorial PDF

Before following an example, check whether the document is both relevant and actionable. A polished PDF can still be stale, aimed at a different API, or missing the authentication detail that makes its sample work.

  • Publisher: Prefer the API provider’s own documentation for endpoint behavior and credentials.
  • Date and version: Look for a last-updated date and the API version or product edition the tutorial targets. If either is unclear, treat endpoint instructions as unverified until checked against the live reference.
  • Scope: Confirm whether the material teaches general request concepts or a particular service, platform, and workflow. An API Gateway exercise, for example, is not a general REST lesson.
  • Request ingredients: A useful example identifies the HTTP method, endpoint path, required path, query, or body parameters, headers, authentication, and expected response.
  • Client or language: Check that the example uses a client you can run, such as curl, a command-line interface, JavaScript, or the service’s SDK.
  • Connection to live docs: Prefer a PDF that points back to the current online reference, so you can verify changed paths, parameters, or credentials.
  • Offline availability: Confirm that the page actually provides an export or PDF option. Documentation pages and controls can change; do not assume a search result or old link is a durable standalone PDF.

GitHub’s guide organizes requests around these components and directs readers to endpoint references for method and parameter specifics. That distinction matters: the tutorial teaches how to assemble a request, while the endpoint reference says what a particular operation accepts.

Save the official guide for offline reading

  1. Open the provider’s live documentation. Start from the official guide or API reference, not a reposted file of uncertain date.
  2. Find the page for the tutorial you need. If there is a page-level PDF or Markdown export control, use the current control and save the resulting file locally. The GitHub guide may offer such export choices; AWS documentation pages also surface PDF options.
  3. Check what the export includes. Make sure the saved copy contains the steps and examples you plan to use. Follow links in the online version if an endpoint reference, credential explanation, or parameter list is separate.
  4. Record its context. Keep the source page, the date you saved it, and the API or version it covers alongside the PDF. This makes it easier to recognize when a saved instruction may no longer match the live service.
  5. Use the PDF as a guide, not as proof that an endpoint is still current. Before making a real request, compare the method, path, authentication, and parameters with the provider’s current online reference.

Make your first request safely

A REST API request targets a particular endpoint and uses an HTTP method. Depending on the API, it may also need headers, authentication, and path, query, or body parameters. The provider’s endpoint documentation determines the actual values; do not copy a token format or permission assumption from a different service.

  1. Choose one small, read-only operation. Find it in the target API’s official reference. Avoid starting with an operation that creates, changes, or deletes data.
  2. Copy the documented method and path. Replace any path placeholders with the real values the endpoint requires. Do not guess a path from a tutorial for another API.
  3. Add parameters in the documented location. Check whether each value belongs in the path, query string, or request body. Include only the required values and any optional values the example needs.
  4. Set the required headers and authentication. Follow the API’s current instructions for authorization, media types, and any other headers. Authentication and permission requirements vary by service.
  5. Send the request with a suitable client. Use the exact client example in the tutorial when possible. GitHub’s guide, for example, demonstrates GitHub CLI, curl, and JavaScript.
  6. Inspect the status and response body. Compare what you received with the documented example. If they differ, check the endpoint reference and request details rather than assuming the PDF’s sample fits your account or API version.

Keep real access tokens private. GitHub specifically advises treating access tokens like passwords. Do not paste a working token into a shared PDF, screenshot, support post, or source file that other people can access.

Common problems and how to recover

  • The sample endpoint is unavailable or behaves differently. The PDF may describe another API version or an old path. Open the provider’s live endpoint reference and verify the method and path before changing your request.
  • The server rejects authentication. Confirm that you are using the target service’s specified authentication method and that the credential has the permissions the operation requires. A token format or scope from another provider is not interchangeable.
  • The request runs but returns an unexpected result. Compare the required headers and path, query, and body parameters with the endpoint documentation. Check the documented response example, not just the tutorial’s introductory explanation.
  • You cannot find a stable PDF download. Use the live page’s current export control if available. If the page offers no PDF control, consult the online guide rather than relying on an unverified download address.
  • An AWS exercise asks for extra setup. Confirm that the exercise is an API Gateway tutorial and review the relevant AWS documentation for account, integration, or cost requirements before creating resources.
  • You are about to test a write or delete operation. Stop and verify its effect in the endpoint reference. Use a read-only request for the first test; write operations can change data, and their behavior is specific to the endpoint.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean capture of a documentation page to keep with your notes, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers—not a source of REST lessons or a replacement for the API provider’s reference. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; the following supplied cURL example captures a web page as a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the API details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing outcome. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Keep the PDF useful after you save it

A saved tutorial is most useful as a learning aid and checklist, not as a frozen authority on a live service. Keep it associated with its official source and version context; check the online provider documentation whenever a request depends on current endpoints, credentials, permissions, or behavior. For a first experiment, the safest workflow is to learn request structure from a reputable guide, then validate every service-specific detail against the endpoint reference before sending the request.
