There is no single hidden-message inbox on a Samsung Galaxy. A missing conversation may be archived in Google Messages, in Trash in some versions of Samsung Messages, inside a hidden Secure Folder, or simply concealed in lock-screen notifications. Check the messaging app and location involved before trying to unlock anything.
First identify what is hidden
Use where the conversation is missing to choose the right path:
- Missing from the conversation list: Check the Archive or Trash menu in the messaging app you use.
- Expected in a protected area: Open Secure Folder and check the Messages app inside it.
- Message arrives but its text is concealed while the phone is locked: Change the lock-screen notification preview setting. This affects visibility, not the conversation itself.
Google Messages and Samsung Messages have different menus and behaviors. Confirm which app is installed before following app-specific steps. Samsung notes that Samsung Messages may not come preinstalled on every Galaxy model; in supported cases it may be available from Galaxy Store. See Samsung’s Galaxy Messages guide.

Check Archive or Trash in the messaging app
Google Messages
Open Google Messages and inspect its Archive area for a conversation removed from the main list. An archived conversation is not the same as a locked or encrypted conversation.

Samsung Messages
A Samsung Community response describes deleted conversations appearing in Trash, where they may be restored. This behavior can vary with app version, so open Samsung Messages and check its current menus rather than assuming it has the same Archive feature as Google Messages. The guidance is from the Samsung Community, not a universal specification for every Galaxy phone.
Find a hidden Secure Folder
Secure Folder is a separate protected space for apps and data. If you used a Messages app inside it, that app is a separate instance: its conversations do not automatically appear in the regular Messages app. Open Secure Folder and check the Messages app there.

Use Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Secure Folder to show or hide it. If the tile is absent, edit the Quick Settings buttons and add it if available.
- Authenticate with the Secure Folder credential, then open Messages inside the folder.

- Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder.
- Authenticate, then turn on Add Secure Folder to Apps screen if you want its icon visible in the app list.
- Open Secure Folder and check the Messages app inside.
Exact labels and availability can differ by model, software version, and region. Samsung’s Canadian Secure Folder guidance explains that apps and data in the folder are distinct from their ordinary counterparts.

Unlock Secure Folder if you have forgotten its credential
Use the PIN, password, pattern, or supported biometric method configured for Secure Folder. It may not use the same code as the phone’s screen lock.
Samsung-account reset is available only if Reset with Samsung account was enabled for Secure Folder. If that option was not enabled and you cannot remember the credential, Samsung’s documented route may require removing Secure Folder and setting it up again, which could erase the folder’s contents. If the messages matter, contact Samsung support before taking a destructive step. See Samsung’s UK instructions for resetting a Secure Folder password.

Secure Folder is not supported on some older models, and its availability and menu paths vary by device, software, and market.

If the conversation is present but its text is hidden in notifications, change the preview setting. For Google Messages, Samsung’s Galaxy guide gives this route:

- Open Google Messages.
- Tap the profile icon, then Messages settings > Notifications.
- Choose Show or hide content when locked and select the preview behavior you want.
Depending on the phone and software, the general setting may instead appear as Hide content on lock screen or Lock screen notifications. Samsung’s notification guidance covers those options. Revealing previews does not restore an archived, deleted, or missing conversation.
