You can run it locally as a client-launched stdio process with uvx --from 'browser-use[cli]' browser-use --mcp, or connect an MCP client to Browser Use’s hosted HTTP service at https://api.browser-use.com/v3/mcp using an x-browser-use-api-key header. Choose local when the browser and profile must stay on your machine; choose hosted when you want Browser Use to run the task in its cloud browser.
Find the real Browser Use MCP project
Search results contain similarly named packages and repositories. The integration instructions relevant to this setup are maintained in the official browser-use/browser-use repository. The project README is also available at github.com/hoursfu/browser-use. Check the repository’s current instructions before deploying because package commands, client schemas and cloud endpoints can change.
Choose local stdio or hosted HTTP
| Choice | How it connects | Where the browser runs | Credentials and typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local | Your MCP client starts uvx and communicates over stdio; no MCP URL is required. |
Your computer, optionally using a persistent Chrome profile. | An OPENAI_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is required for the LLM-backed workflow. Best for step-by-step control of your own browser session. |
| Hosted | Streamable HTTP at https://api.browser-use.com/v3/mcp, authenticated with x-browser-use-api-key. |
Browser Use’s cloud browser. | A Browser Use API key. Best for handing a complete task to a cloud agent and receiving its result. |
The repository integration file contains an older cloud URL in one example. Use the versioned /v3/mcp endpoint and the header shown in the current cloud MCP setup guide for new hosted connections.
Prerequisites for a local server
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf or Claude Code.
uvinstalled so that theuvxlauncher is available on your PATH. On macOS or Linux, find its absolute path withwhich uvxif your client cannot locate it.- An OpenAI or Anthropic API key for the local LLM workflow.
- A browser profile and workspace directory appropriate for the data the agent may access.
Start the local Browser Use MCP server
1. Verify the launcher
uvx --version
If that command fails, install uv using its official installation method, restart your terminal, and verify the command again. Do not substitute a random similarly named package.

2. Test the official launch command
uvx --from 'browser-use[cli]' browser-use --mcp
This process speaks MCP over standard input and output. A terminal may appear to wait without printing a web server address; that is expected. The MCP client, not a browser tab or an HTTP listener, starts and manages it.
3. Add it to an MCP client
Use the client’s MCP settings and supply a command plus arguments. A Claude Desktop-style entry is:
{
"mcpServers": {
"browser-use": {
"command": "/absolute/path/to/uvx",
"args": [
"--from", "browser-use[cli]",
"browser-use", "--mcp"
],
"env": {
"OPENAI_API_KEY": "your-openai-key"
}
}
}
}
Replace the command with the path returned by which uvx when necessary. Keep the key in the client’s environment configuration rather than embedding it in prompts. After saving, restart the client so it launches a fresh process, then check that Browser Use tools appear in the client’s tool list.
4. Choose the LLM provider
Set OPENAI_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, according to the provider you intend to use. If both are present, follow the repository’s current provider and model-selection settings instead of assuming which one wins.
Connect to the hosted MCP server
Get the key
Create or open your Browser Use cloud account and obtain an API key as described in the official cloud setup guide. Treat it as a secret: do not commit it to a repository or paste it into a shared prompt.

Claude Code
Use the HTTP transport and current endpoint:
claude mcp add --transport http browser-use https://api.browser-use.com/v3/mcp
Configure the x-browser-use-api-key header using the environment-variable or secret mechanism supported by your Claude Code version. The exact flag syntax can change; verify it in the current client help output.
Claude Desktop, Cursor and Windsurf
Each client accepts an HTTP MCP server definition. Set the server URL to https://api.browser-use.com/v3/mcp and add an HTTP header named x-browser-use-api-key containing your key. Use the client’s current JSON schema for header fields; do not copy the repository’s older endpoint example unchanged.
Confirm the connection
- Restart the client after saving its MCP configuration.
- Open the MCP or tools panel and confirm Browser Use tools are listed.
- Run a harmless task, such as opening a public page and returning its title.
- Inspect the returned result and client logs before allowing access to authenticated sites.
What the local server can do
The integration reference lists tools for navigation, clicking, typing, reading page state, scrolling, going back, managing tabs, extracting content and ending a session. This is direct browser control: your prompt can ask the agent to perform a sequence and inspect intermediate pages rather than only submitting one opaque cloud job.
The official MCP manifest exposes settings that affect how those tools operate:
- Browser execution: visible or headless mode, Chromium selection, viewport expansion and deterministic rendering.
- Sessions: a persistent Chrome profile directory and workspace directory.
- Safety: allowed domains, sensitive-data masking, timeouts, wait intervals and maximum agent steps.
- Model behavior: provider keys, model selection and optional vision.
- Diagnostics: logging controls and browser-stealth settings.
Documented defaults include headless mode off, stealth mode off, sensitive-data masking on, Chromium as the browser, a 30,000 ms timeout and a 100-step maximum. Treat these as manifest defaults, not guarantees that every client or future release keeps the same values.

Security and profile practices
Protect persistent profiles
A persistent profile can contain cookies and authenticated sessions. Point the profile directory at a browser identity you deliberately expose to the agent, protect its filesystem permissions, and do not reuse a personal profile containing unrelated accounts.
Limit domains and sensitive output
Use allowed-domain controls and keep sensitive-data masking enabled unless a documented workflow requires otherwise. Review extracted text before sending it to another system.
Do not disable security casually
The manifest documents BROWSER_USE_DISABLE_SECURITY=true and marks the related setting for caution. It should not be a routine fix for connection errors. First correct paths, keys, permissions and client configuration; only change security controls after understanding the risk and the scope of the test.
Hosted costs and vendor-published performance figures
Browser Use’s MCP product page states a current price of $0.02 per browser hour, plus model-token costs. The same page reports an internal vendor benchmark of 82% of 106 tasks at 17¢ per solved task. Those numbers are Browser Use’s own current claims, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for your workload. Actual spend depends on browser time, model choice, retries and task complexity.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
“command not found: uvx”
Install uv, reopen the shell, and run which uvx. Put the absolute path in the MCP configuration when the desktop client has a different PATH from your terminal.

The client starts, then immediately reports a closed server
Run uvx --from 'browser-use[cli]' browser-use --mcp manually and inspect the error. Check Python/package download access, API-key variable names and JSON quoting. Remove stray logging or shell output from wrappers; stdio MCP clients expect protocol messages on that stream.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
No tools appear after editing configuration
Validate the JSON, confirm the command and argument order, and fully restart the client. Ensure you configured an MCP server entry rather than an ordinary HTTP URL for local mode.
Hosted requests return unauthorized
Use the current https://api.browser-use.com/v3/mcp URL and an x-browser-use-api-key header. Check for whitespace, expired keys and client header syntax. Do not send the key as a query parameter unless the current cloud guide explicitly requires it.
The agent cannot see a logged-in site
Local mode needs the intended persistent profile and a browser process that can access it. Hosted mode uses a cloud browser and does not automatically inherit your desktop cookies; configure the hosted session according to Browser Use’s current cloud documentation.
A task times out or loops
Reduce the task to smaller actions, increase the documented timeout only when necessary, and set an appropriate step limit. Check domain restrictions, waits for dynamic content and whether a site presents a bot challenge. Never solve a challenge by disabling security blindly.

When a screenshot is all you need
If your goal is a reliable image or PDF rather than interactive browser control, ScreenshotNeo is a simpler alternative. It accepts one GET request and can capture PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the API directly; the ScreenshotNeo documentation lists all options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Practical decision checklist
- Choose local stdio when you need your own browser, profile, direct controls or local workspace access.
- Choose hosted HTTP when a cloud browser should execute a complete task and return the result.
- Choose ScreenshotNeo when the deliverable is a cleaned screenshot or PDF, not an interactive agent session.
- Recheck endpoint versions, package syntax and client schemas before production deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does local Browser Use MCP need a server URL?
No. The MCP client launches the local command and communicates over stdio. A URL is required only for the hosted HTTP service.
Which API key does local mode use?
The local workflow documents an OpenAI or Anthropic provider key, supplied through environment variables such as OPENAI_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.
Can hosted and local mode share the same browser profile?
Not automatically. Local mode can use a profile directory on your computer; hosted mode runs in a cloud browser and requires its own session or profile configuration.
Where are Browser Use’s MCP defaults documented?
The project’s MCP manifest lists fields and defaults, including timeout, step limit, masking, browser type and headless behavior.
