Follow an ant trail to the spot where it disappears into a crack, gap, or opening, then seal that confirmed route with a material suited to the opening. Check the corresponding area outside, keep ventilation paths clear, and remove food and moisture that may keep ants foraging indoors.
How to trace an ant trail to its entry point
- Watch the ants before cleaning or spraying. Follow their direction of travel until they disappear behind trim, into a wall or floor crack, or through an opening around a pipe or wire. Ants commonly travel along structural features, so inspect those routes rather than looking only at the floor. UC IPM recommends checking trails around sinks, cupboards, pipes, electrical wires, foundations, and walls.
- Check nearby indoor areas. Look under sinks, inside cupboards, near food storage, and in damp locations. A trail may lead to an opening that is partly hidden by stored items or fixtures.
- Inspect the matching exterior area. When accessible, check the outside of the same wall or foundation, along with door and window edges and wall penetrations. Look for connected trails and branches or vines touching the building; vegetation can provide ants a route toward the structure. University of Nevada, Reno Extension also recommends inspecting and addressing conditions around the home.
Start with the opening where you actually see ants enter. It is usually more useful to seal a confirmed route than to try to close every crack around the house.
What to use to seal an ant entry point

There is no one material specification established for every surface or opening. Follow the product directions, and do not block a vent or other feature whose purpose you have not identified.

Reduce the reasons ants keep coming inside
- Clean food spills and residue, and keep sweets and pet food in closed containers.
- Address moisture sources where possible, including leaks or persistently damp areas.
- Prune branches and vegetation that touch the house.
- Wipe ant trails with soapy water while you address the opening; this removes trail cues.
If you use bait, follow its label and relevant extension directions. Do not wipe out or otherwise disrupt a bait trail when the instructions say ants need to carry bait back.

Recheck the route and decide when to get help
After sealing and cleaning, watch the area again. Ants may be using more than one opening or may shift to another route, so activity at a new spot does not necessarily mean the original opening was sealed incorrectly. Repeat the tracing process for any new trail.
If ants persist, or if the species matters to choosing a control method, ask a local Extension office about identification. University of Nevada, Reno Extension recommends identifying ants before selecting a method. Consider professional advice when the activity remains difficult to resolve or you suspect wood-damaging ants. Sealing an opening is exclusion; it does not by itself identify or eliminate a colony.
