A suspicious permission or browser symptom is a reason to investigate—not proof that an extension is malicious.
How to tell whether an extension deserves a closer look
Open your browser’s extension manager and review every item, including extensions that are currently disabled. For each one, ask whether you remember installing it, whether you still need it, and whether its requested access makes sense for the job it claims to do. Mozilla specifically recommends reviewing installed extensions and removing ones you do not recognize or remember installing.
Pay particular attention to an extension whose purpose is unclear, whose permissions seem unrelated to its advertised function, or whose arrival coincides with unwanted browser changes. Broad access to websites is not, by itself, proof of malicious intent: some extensions need to read or change page content to work. If you cannot establish that an extension is trustworthy or necessary, remove it.
Changes to browser features or settings that you cannot view or modify, excessive device-health messages, ads that are difficult to close, pages altered to show specific ads, browsing monitoring, or loss of browser control can indicate unwanted software. These symptoms do not establish that an extension caused the problem; another program on the device may be responsible.

Review and remove extensions in Chrome
Inspect permissions and site access
On a computer, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Select Details to inspect an extension. Chrome also lets you change whether it can access sites: choose access only when you click the extension, on selected sites, or on all sites. Use the narrowest access that still allows a trusted extension to perform its stated function.
Disable or remove an extension
- Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
- To disable an extension while you investigate, switch it off in the manager.
- To remove it, select Remove beside the extension and confirm.
If the extension’s icon appears beside the address bar, you can also right-click it and select Remove from Chrome.

Review and remove extensions in Firefox
Open the Add-ons Manager
Choose Extensions and themes > Extensions, or enter about:addons in a new tab. Review each listed extension, including disabled ones, and consider whether you recognize it and still need it.
Disable or remove an extension
Use the controls shown for the extension in the Add-ons Manager to disable it temporarily or remove it. Mozilla recommends removing extensions you do not recognize or remember installing.

Review and remove extensions in Microsoft Edge
Inspect permissions and site access
Select Extensions beside the address bar, then Manage extensions. Review each extension’s permissions and site access. Edge offers choices such as allowing access when you click the extension, on selected sites, or on all sites. Match access to the extension’s purpose rather than treating broad access as automatic evidence of malware.
Disable or remove an extension
- Open Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Switch an extension off to disable it while you investigate.
- To remove it, use the extension icon’s context menu or its More actions menu, then choose Remove from Microsoft Edge and confirm.
If an extension listed in Microsoft Edge Add-ons appears to violate policy or contain malware, Microsoft provides a Report abuse process on its listing.

If the extension returns or browser changes persist
Removing an extension may not resolve the problem if another program is changing browser settings or extension files. Google warns: “If you repaired an extension but it’s still corrupted, a suspicious program might be changing this extension’s files.”
- Check installed applications. If the symptoms began recently, sort applications by install date, look for unfamiliar recent installs, and uninstall ones you do not trust. Microsoft recommends this as part of addressing unwanted software.
- Scan the device. If an extension remains corrupted, returns, or unwanted symptoms continue, run trusted antivirus or anti-malware software. Google recommends scanning when a suspicious program may be changing extension files. A scan is a follow-up step, not a guarantee that every problem will be removed.
- Reset Chrome settings if they remain altered. In Chrome, open Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. Afterward, turn back on only extensions you trust.
Avoid deleting extension folders by hand or editing the system registry based on anecdotal instructions. The supported steps are to use the browser manager, remove suspect applications, scan when symptoms persist, and reset Chrome settings if needed.

When an extension is managed by work or school
If your browser says an extension is installed or controlled by your organization, contact your work or school administrator rather than trying to override its management. Organizations can control which extensions are allowed, and administrators are responsible for managed extension policies.
The menu names above reflect vendor help pages accessed on October 4, 2026; wording can change as browsers update. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance was last updated April 24, 2024. These are practical cleanup steps, not a forensic method for proving whether an individual extension is malicious.
