Pause Mortal Kombat 11 and open the selected fighter’s Move List. Choose a special move, then enter the directional and attack-button sequence shown on screen. Commands vary by fighter, and forward and back are relative to the fighter’s current facing direction. Use the in-game list for the exact command on your character, platform, and variation.
Find the move and its command

Select the move you want to perform and read its displayed directional and attack-button sequence. There is no single special-move input that works for every fighter.

Enter the sequence using your current control bindings. If the command includes amplification, check that move’s entry rather than assuming one amplify button applies to every move and platform.

For example, the official PlayStation game page gives Scorpion’s spear and Raiden’s flying attack as special-move examples. Use the game’s Move List—not examples elsewhere—as the source for their exact inputs.
Read forward and back relative to your fighter
In command notation, forward means toward the opponent and back means away from the opponent. Those directions change when the fighters switch sides: a command that used a right direction while your fighter faced right may require the opposite screen direction when your fighter faces left. A third-party MK11 move reference, last updated June 1, 2026, uses the convention that commands assume the fighter faces right. Treat that as a notation aid; the in-game Move List is the better guide for your current fighter and setup.
Make difficult inputs easier
If a move is hard to execute consistently, try the game’s input options before changing your technique or controller.

Input Shortcuts reduce the directional precision required for special moves. Look for the setting in Options, Character Select, or the Pause Menu, depending on the mode. Availability through local-mode menus excludes the Krypt; online access is through Character Select.
Input Window Timing
Input Window Timing changes how much time the game allows for entering commands. The available settings are short, medium, and long. Try a different setting and test the result in a tutorial or Practice Mode.

These settings serve different needs: Input Shortcuts affect directional precision, while Input Window Timing adjusts the input window. Choose based on which part of the command is giving you trouble.
Practice the timing and confirm your inputs
Use the tutorials to see move inputs and timing demonstrations, then rehearse the command in Practice Mode. WB Games says tutorials cover gameplay aspects and can be revisited, and that most tutorial segments demonstrate inputs and timing. If you are uncertain about a current menu option, check the tutorial and Practice Mode menus in your version of the game.

WB’s update notes documented a full button-log option in Practice and Replay in 2020. That is a dated feature note, so check the current Practice or Replay menu rather than assuming the option is still presented in the same way.
Check your controller and button labels
Button names differ across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC setups, and controls can be reconfigured. If the command’s labels do not match your controller, check the game’s current control configuration and follow the bindings shown there. WB Games documents support for alternative input devices, including arcade-style fight sticks and the Xbox Adaptive Controller, for gameplay. Fight sticks are not supported in every mode, including the Krypt and Towers of Time.

It stopped working after the fighters switched sides: check which way your fighter is facing and reverse the screen direction for forward or back as needed.

The timing feels too strict or too loose: change Input Window Timing among short, medium, and long, then test again.
