High memory use by itself does not prove something is wrong: look for sluggishness and signs that your system is running short of memory before deciding to close programs or consider an upgrade.
Find memory use in Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, inspect the Memory column to see which listed apps and processes are using memory. Select Performance to review overall memory use and available system headroom. Microsoft recommends checking these views, along with CPU and disk activity, when investigating slow performance (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance).
- Save your work, then close apps you recognize and are not using. Prefer each app’s normal close command. Do not end an unfamiliar process simply because its name is obscure or its memory figure is nonzero.
- If the same background use returns after restarting, open Task Manager’s Startup apps view. Disable only programs you recognize and do not want to launch automatically.
Close unused browser tabs and apps, then see whether responsiveness improves. If it does not, restart and reopen only what you need. Microsoft also identifies startup activity, outdated software, storage issues, and hardware limitations as potential contributors to slow performance; they are separate from identifying a memory-heavy process (Microsoft).
Find memory pressure on a Mac
- Open Activity Monitor and select Memory.
- Review the process list and the summary at the bottom of the window. Apple lists measures including Memory Pressure, Physical Memory, Memory Used, App Memory, Wired Memory, Compressed, Cached Files, and Swap Used.
- Use the Memory Pressure graph alongside symptoms such as repeated slowdowns. Apple says the graph “Graphically represents how efficiently your memory is serving your processing needs.” Pressure reflects free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and cached files, so Memory Used alone does not tell the whole story (Apple’s Activity Monitor User Guide).
- Quit an app you recognize and no longer need using its normal Quit command. Use force quit when an app or process needs to be stopped, not as routine memory cleanup (Apple’s process-quit instructions).
macOS can compress inactive app memory as it approaches capacity. It also uses otherwise unused memory to cache files, which can help apps reopen faster. Cached or compressed memory is not automatically wasted memory to purge (Apple).
Check memory in GNOME Linux
- Open System Monitor and select Resources to inspect system memory (RAM), as described in the GNOME System Monitor guide.
- If memory is close to full and the computer is slow, close programs you do not need. GNOME explains that the system may use disk swap as temporary memory, which is much slower than RAM. GNOME Help says, “If the memory usage is close to 100%, this can slow things down a lot” (GNOME Help).
- If the computer becomes too slow to use normally, restart it. For Linux systems using a different desktop environment or distribution, use its own system monitor and documentation; the GNOME menu names may not apply.
Decide whether a program is using too much memory
There is no universal percentage or per-app number in the cited guidance that proves a program is using too much memory. Judge the figure alongside what the computer is doing: slow app switching, long delays, or repeated sluggishness together with low available memory or swap activity are more useful warning signs than a high number on its own.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What a memory figure represents also varies. On Windows, a process’s Working Set is the RAM it uses at a point in time; committed memory includes RAM and the page file. Microsoft discusses these counters in a Windows Server performance guide, where they are used for technical analysis rather than as a consumer cutoff. Compare a process’s use with overall available memory rather than treating either figure in isolation (Microsoft’s performance troubleshooting guide).
On a Mac, distinguish app memory and wired memory from compressed memory, cached files, and swap. Cached files occupy otherwise unused memory and may help apps reopen faster. The Memory Pressure graph provides context about whether memory is serving the workload effectively (Apple).

What to do if memory use keeps returning
- One app rises again quickly: Note the app and what you were doing when its memory use grew. Update or troubleshoot that app, or contact its publisher, rather than repeatedly stopping essential processes.
- No single app explains the slowdown: Check for other performance factors such as startup activity, outdated software, storage issues, and hardware limits. Closing a memory-heavy app will not resolve every cause of slow performance (Microsoft).
- Memory pressure is sustained during normal use: First check whether the workload is one your computer is expected to handle. Apple provides Activity Monitor guidance for assessing whether a Mac could use more RAM (Apple’s RAM guidance). Then verify whether your exact model supports a memory upgrade; this is not possible on every Mac or computer.
Consider a hardware upgrade only if ordinary work repeatedly leaves too little memory and software steps do not meaningfully improve performance. Microsoft notes that older hardware can limit the benefit of software changes; confirm upgrade compatibility with the device maker for your exact model before buying memory (Microsoft).

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The Task Manager steps above describe where to inspect memory, but a Windows 10 PC still in use is no longer covered by support as of that date (Microsoft).
