To find why a PHP application is slow, reproduce the affected request or job, capture evidence with PHP-FPM logging and a profiler, identify whether PHP code, database work, or external waits dominate, then change one cause and measure the same workload again. Profiling reveals where to investigate; it does not fix the problem by itself.
Start with a repeatable slow request or job
First narrow the symptom to something you can run again: a particular URL and input, a user or account state, a background job, or a CLI command. Record the response time and relevant resource behavior under representative conditions. A single unexplained slow request is not enough to conclude that the whole application is slow.
Keep the test conditions as consistent as possible when you compare a change: use the same route or command, comparable data and account state, and the same environment. This gives you a meaningful before-and-after comparison rather than a guess based on a different workload.
Check PHP-FPM slow requests and worker behavior
For web requests served by PHP-FPM, its slowlog can record slow scripts with PHP backtraces; its status feature provides information that can help investigate pool and worker behavior. Configure a threshold and log path deliberately, then correlate the captured traces and status information with the affected requests. See the PHP-FPM configuration manual for the available settings.

Protect the FastCGI listener. The PHP manual warns that an untrusted client can control request configuration through the interface and execute code. Restrict access with appropriate local or network controls; do not expose the listener to untrusted networks.
Profile the affected workload
Use Xdebug for focused call-graph investigation
Xdebug’s profiler can emit Cachegrind-compatible profile files for inspection with KCacheGrind or QCacheGrind. Enable its profile mode and configure the output directory; trigger-based activation lets you select requests instead of creating profiles for every request. Profile output can become very large for complex scripts, so use it selectively and manage the generated files. Follow the Xdebug profiling documentation for current configuration details.

A profile can help show which function paths consume execution time and provide memory-related profile data. Read the call paths and repeated work before deciding what to change: the data is evidence to interpret, not an optimization in itself.
Use Blackfire for browser requests or CLI commands
Blackfire documents profiling both browser requests and CLI commands using its PHP probe and browser or command-line client. Follow its current installation instructions and compatibility notes. The installation guidance cautions that Xdebug may cause unexpected PHP engine behavior while profiling; consider disabling Xdebug if you encounter that issue.

Choose an investigation method for the symptom

Choose based on where the issue occurs, whether you can profile in development, staging, or production, the level of detail you need, operational overhead, compatibility, and privacy or cost constraints. No single approach is best for every application.
Read the evidence, then target the dominant cost
Use traces and profiles to determine whether time is concentrated in application functions, database activity, network calls, or other waits. A high overall elapsed time alone does not show which of these to change. Follow expensive call paths and repeated operations, then focus on the cause that accounts for the observed delay.

For example, a profile dominated by a repeated application call points toward examining that call path; time concentrated in database activity instead calls for investigating the database work. These are diagnostic directions, not proof of a particular fix: confirm the cause in the affected workload before changing code or infrastructure.

Confirm that OPcache is active for the PHP SAPI serving the affected workload, and inspect its status and configuration. OPcache stores precompiled PHP bytecode in shared memory so scripts do not need to be loaded and parsed on every request. Capacity and timestamp-validation behavior matter, but changing settings without understanding deployment freshness requirements can create stale-code problems.

Use the configuration reference for the deployed PHP version rather than copying an old tuning snippet. The OPcache configuration manual documents version-specific directives and behavior: for example, opcache.fast_shutdown was removed in PHP 7.2, and JIT settings have their own version history. Disabling opcache.save_comments can break frameworks that rely on comments for annotations; disabling timestamp validation can leave stale data in use. Check application and deployment requirements before changing either setting. The PHP manual describes OPcache as bundled with PHP 5.5 and later, but availability and options depend on the runtime and its configuration.
Make one change and verify the result
- Save the baseline: note the exact route or command, its input and relevant conditions, and the current latency and resource behavior.
- Choose a change supported by the evidence: target the identified expensive path or runtime issue rather than applying unrelated tuning.
- Repeat the same workload: compare results under comparable conditions, including resource behavior.
- Run correctness checks: confirm the change preserves expected behavior and, for cache-related changes, code freshness.
- Keep or revert: retain the change only if it improves the target behavior without compromising correctness or deployment assumptions.
There is no universal configuration value or guaranteed speedup for PHP applications. The effective fix depends on the bottleneck the evidence identifies.
