The app, signal, notification, or update activity recorded there can point to a specific cause. There is no official overnight battery-loss percentage that applies to every phone, so compare your own device under similar conditions rather than relying on a universal threshold.
Measure the drain before troubleshooting
Note the battery level before bed and again when you wake. If the loss is not urgent, repeat the check for another night under roughly similar conditions. This gives you a useful comparison, not a pass-or-fail benchmark: overnight use varies with the phone, apps, signal, settings, and battery condition.
Check what used battery overnight
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review the battery-use chart and select the overnight period or day where available.
- Look for app and system activity, including Background Activity, No Mobile Coverage/Low Signal, and Notifications. Apple explains these indicators and battery-use causes in its iPhone battery and performance guidance.
Background activity can include tasks such as music playback or location use. Notifications may wake the phone, while weak cellular coverage can affect battery life. Treat the activity shown on your own phone as the clue; the label alone does not prove a fault.
On Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Select View by apps and inspect which apps used battery, including their background use.
- On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly.
Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting instructions apply to Pixel phones. Other Android manufacturers and software versions may use different menu names and diagnostic options.

Match a change to the evidence
Change one thing at a time, then compare battery history again. That makes it easier to tell whether a step helped.
An app is using battery in the background
Review background-use permissions or controls for the app identified in the battery history. On Pixel, Google generally recommends leaving battery usage set to Optimized for apps. It warns that force-stopping essential apps or services can make the phone malfunction. On iPhone, consider reviewing Background App Refresh or location permission when the corresponding activity appears. Avoid switching off all background activity without identifying a reason. Apple describes relevant controls in its battery guidance; Google explains app optimization in its Pixel troubleshooting steps.

The phone reports low or absent cellular signal
If practical, compare battery use in a location with stronger reception or use Wi-Fi where available. Apple says Airplane Mode may help when you know the phone will be without coverage, but calls cannot be made or received while it is on. Use it as a deliberate test for a no-coverage situation, not as a default setting. See Apple’s explanation of signal-related battery use.
Notifications are waking the phone
If battery history points to repeated notification activity from one app, reduce that app’s alerts rather than disabling notifications across the phone. Apple explains the connection between notifications and battery use in its battery guidance.

The drain started after an update or setup
Operating-system updates can leave background work running temporarily. Apple notes that this can affect battery life and thermal performance; Google says some extra Pixel drain after an update is normal and advises checking again after a few days if the issue persists. If the timing fits, wait a few days and then review battery history again before treating it as a continuing problem. See Apple’s guidance and Google’s Pixel troubleshooting page.
Pixel battery optimization is off
Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled on Pixel. Optimization can take a few weeks to reach its full effect after setup or a factory reset. Charging optimization and Adaptive Charging address charging behavior and battery longevity; they are not fixes for unexplained battery use while the phone is unplugged overnight. Check battery health and decide whether to seek service
iPhone battery health
The Battery Health menu location depends on the model:
- iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
If the menu shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement. Apple’s battery guidance explains the health indication; its iPhone user guide says an iPhone battery should be serviced or recycled by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Pixel diagnostics and further help
On Pixel 6 and later, use Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. If the drain remains unusual after reviewing app activity, restarting or updating, and allowing a few days after an update, follow Google’s support route in its Pixel troubleshooting instructions. Apple’s battery-health menu and replacement criteria do not establish equivalent criteria for Android phones.
Use the right benchmark for your phone
Official guidance from Apple and Google provides ways to diagnose battery use, not a typical overnight-loss figure or universal threshold for abnormal drain. A percentage that seems high on one phone is not enough by itself to identify a defect. Battery history, repeated observations under similar conditions, and any built-in health or diagnostic warnings provide more useful evidence.
