Then check whether the executable exists and whether its directory is in $PATH. If the file exists, run it by pathname or add its trusted directory to PATH; if it does not, find and install the distribution package that provides it. If the command was recently moved, check Bash’s remembered location with hash -t tool and clear stale entries with hash -r.
What “command not found” can mean
In Bash, command lookup depends on what kind of name you entered. Bash checks for a function and a builtin before searching PATH for an executable when the command name contains no slash. Bash can also remember executable locations. If lookup fails and no command_not_found_handle function is defined, Bash reports an error and returns status 127. Distributions or shell configuration may customize the error, so the displayed message can vary. See the GNU Bash manual’s Command Search and Execution.
A name containing a slash, such as ./tool or /opt/tool/bin/tool, is treated as a pathname instead of being searched through PATH. This distinction helps separate a lookup problem from a missing file or an execution problem.
Check what Bash resolves before changing anything
Run these commands in the shell where the problem occurs, replacing tool with the command name:

printf '%sn' "$SHELL"
type -a tool
type -P tooltype -a shows applicable interpretations and matches, including aliases, keywords, functions, builtins, and files. type -P forces a search for executable files in PATH. The options and behavior are documented in the GNU Bash manual’s Bash Builtins.
$SHELL often names your login shell, not necessarily the shell currently interpreting the command. If it matters which shell is running, do not treat that variable alone as proof. This procedure describes Bash; other shells may have different lookup commands and behavior.

Inspect PATH and test the executable
Print the PATH received by the current shell:
printf '%sn' "$PATH"PATH is a colon-separated list of directories Bash searches for command names. Check whether the expected executable name is present in those directories. Avoid replacing PATH wholesale: that can remove access to standard system commands. An empty PATH element can have current-directory implications, so do not add one casually.
If you know a likely installation location, check the exact file and its permissions, then try its pathname:

ls -l /likely/directory/tool
/likely/directory/tool --versionIf running the pathname works but typing tool does not, the issue is likely PATH or command resolution. If the pathname fails too, read the error before changing PATH: permissions, a missing file, or an invalid executable or interpreter can also prevent execution.
Choose the fix that matches what you found

Do not assume the package has the same name as the command. Package names and installation steps vary by distribution; consult that distribution’s official package search or package documentation rather than guessing.

Run an existing tool by pathname
For a one-time use, invoke the known executable directly, for example /opt/tool/bin/tool --version. Because the command includes slashes, Bash executes it as a pathname rather than searching PATH. See Bash command search and execution.
Temporarily add a trusted directory to PATH
For a test in the current shell, prepend the known directory while preserving the existing PATH:

PATH="/known/tool-directory:$PATH"
export PATHThen test type -P tool and run the command. Add only a directory you trust: PATH controls which executable can run when you enter a matching command name.
Make a PATH change persistent only in the right startup context
For a lasting change, put the assignment in the startup file read by the shell and session that need it. There is no single startup file that applies to every Linux setup: the right file depends on the shell, whether it is interactive or a login shell, and how it was started. Check the relevant shell’s documentation and session configuration before editing a file. Reopen the relevant shell or session and verify PATH and command resolution afterward.
Install the package if the executable is absent
Identify your distribution, search its official package documentation for the package providing the executable, and install through the normal package manager according to local administrator policy. Because exact package names and install commands differ by distribution, do not infer a package name from the command name.

Bash can save full filenames in a hash table to avoid repeatedly searching PATH. If a tool was moved or removed during the current shell session, inspect the saved pathname and clear remembered locations:

hash -rhash -t tool prints the remembered pathname when one is stored; hash -r forgets remembered command locations. Assigning a new PATH also clears Bash’s hashed filenames. See the GNU Bash manual’s Bourne Shell Builtins. A hash-table path may not be the first matching executable in the current PATH order, so use type -a tool to inspect matches as well.
