Find a portrait-oriented image from a reputable library or your phone’s wallpaper collection, check that it has enough detail for your screen and crop, and preview it before applying. There is no single pixel size that fits every phone: your model’s display and the wallpaper controls determine how the image will look.
Where to find phone wallpapers
Start with your phone’s built-in wallpaper collection or a reputable image library such as Unsplash. Search for both a subject and a style—for example, “misty mountain portrait wallpaper,” “minimal dark botanical phone background,” or “abstract warm gradient mobile wallpaper.” These are useful search phrases, not rankings or guarantees about results.
When you find an image you like, open its original page and use the library’s normal download option. Prefer a full-size download when one is available; a small preview may lose sharpness when enlarged to fill a phone display.
How to choose an image that looks sharp and fits
Check detail for your phone
Look up your phone model or display specifications, then assess the image at the size and crop you plan to use. A large file is not automatically a good wallpaper: it also needs enough pixel detail for the screen. No universal resolution threshold is established for all current phones.

Choose a portrait composition and inspect the crop
Phone screens are generally taller than they are wide, so a portrait-oriented image is often easier to fit. Check where the main subject sits: the clock, widgets, and app icons can cover important details. Use the phone’s wallpaper preview to move or crop the image, and make sure the parts you want to see remain clear. Do not assume generic desktop or 16:9 dimensions will fit your particular phone.
Consider visible people, brands, and artwork
If the image includes a recognizable person, logo, trademark, or artwork, the photo license may not grant every right associated with those elements. This is especially relevant if you plan to republish the image, use it commercially, or present it in a way that suggests endorsement.

Download and apply a wallpaper on Google Pixel
Google’s documented workflow applies to Pixel phones; menus and features can vary by model and software. Follow these steps:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpapers & style, then Change wallpaper.
- Choose a preset category or tap Choose a photo.
- Select the image. If prompted, choose which screen to change.
- Preview and adjust the crop, then apply the wallpaper. Pixel offers the Home screen, Lock screen, or both where that choice is available.
For other Android models, labels and steps may differ. The Pixel instructions should not be treated as universal Android directions. Exact current iPhone steps are not established here; consult Apple Support for the instructions that match your iPhone and iOS version.

Check the image license before using it
Licenses differ by image source, so read the terms on the page where you download the file. Unsplash’s license says, “Unsplash visuals are made to be used freely.” Its standard license allows free downloading, copying, modifying, distributing, performing, and using images commercially without permission or required attribution. It does not allow selling images without significant modification or compiling images to replicate a similar or competing service. Those terms apply to Unsplash, not to every wallpaper site.
Unsplash also explains that a photo license does not automatically cover trademarks, recognizable people, or works of art or authorship shown in a photo. Depending on how you use the image, separate permission may be needed. Its Help Center article dated August 8, 2025 says images may be used for most personal, commercial, and editorial projects without asking permission or crediting the contributor or Unsplash, while directing users to the terms for prohibited uses. Read the current terms for the image and use you have in mind.

Unsplash+ has a separate license for subscription images. Its current license page describes an unlimited, perpetual, nonexclusive, worldwide license for downloaded images, including commercial use without required attribution. It also states that a warranty may cover up to US$10,000 per file when the image is used properly; that cap is subject to the full applicable terms and is not an unconditional guarantee. A typical personal wallpaper does not, based on these terms alone, establish a need for a paid subscription.

Quick checks before setting the image
- Is the image from the original page or an official library download?
- Does it have enough detail for your phone and intended crop?
- Will the crop leave the subject visible around icons, widgets, and lock-screen text?
- Have you checked the source’s license and considered any people, brands, or artwork shown?
- Have you previewed the image on the phone before applying it?
