Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not document a built-in tool that scans file contents and identifies duplicates. For a reliable free check, compare file hashes in PowerShell, inspect every matching file path, and choose which copy to keep before deleting anything. Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations can free space, but they are general cleanup tools—not duplicate-content finders.

Does Windows have a built-in duplicate file finder?

Microsoft’s Windows storage tools manage categories of files rather than comparing file contents. Storage Sense can remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents, while Cleanup recommendations can help you review large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Neither page describes a duplicate-content scan.

Storage Sense works on the system drive by default; other drives have separate storage settings. Downloads and cloud content depend on your configuration. For OneDrive, making a file online-only frees local space without permanently deleting the cloud copy; files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt from Storage Sense management. Check the labels and settings shown on your Windows version before changing them.

Find likely duplicates in File Explorer

If you only need a quick manual check, inspect folders where copies commonly accumulate, such as Downloads, Desktop, or folders used for project exports. In File Explorer, sort by size to spot large files or search for familiar duplicate-name patterns such as “(1)” or “Copy.” Microsoft also recommends reviewing personal files by size as part of a storage audit.

These methods find candidates, not proven duplicates. A renamed copy may not share a recognizable name, and two files with the same size can contain different data. Do not delete files solely because their names or sizes match.

Compare file contents with PowerShell

A content hash is a fingerprint calculated from a file’s bytes. Files with matching hashes are treated as having identical contents for this workflow; their paths still matter, so review where each copy lives before deciding what to remove. Microsoft documents PowerShell file enumeration and removal commands, but its file-and-folder guidance is not a ready-made duplicate-finder script. The example below is a practical way to enumerate files, group same-sized candidates, hash them, and print groups with matching hashes.

1. Choose a folder and open PowerShell

Open Start, search for PowerShell, then open it. Decide which folder to scan—for example, a particular folder under your user profile—rather than beginning with the entire system drive. A broad scan can take a long time and include files that Windows or applications need.

2. Run a review-only duplicate scan

Replace the example path with the folder you want to inspect. This command groups candidates by file size before hashing, then prints the paths of files with matching SHA-256 hashes. It does not delete anything.

PowerShell must read the contents to calculate hashes, so a large tree or slow drive can take time. Grouping by size first reduces unnecessary hashing because files of different sizes cannot be byte-for-byte identical. The third-party guide Find Duplicate Files on Windows: PowerShell Get-FileHash describes this general approach; it is not Microsoft product documentation.

3. Decide which copy to keep

For each printed group, inspect the complete paths in File Explorer. A matching hash tells you about content, not purpose: one copy may belong in a project folder while another is an intentional backup or working copy. Keep the copy that belongs in the location you rely on, and do not assume the oldest, newest, shortest-path, or first-listed file is expendable.

4. Remove only the copies you selected

Once you have checked a specific path and are certain it is safe to remove, delete that file through File Explorer if you want the usual Recycle Bin recovery option. Emptying the Recycle Bin is what Microsoft says completes removal and frees the associated space. PowerShell’s Remove-Item removes an item; do not assume it sends files to the Recycle Bin. Avoid piping all scan results into a deletion command.

Use a graphical duplicate finder if you prefer

A dedicated utility can make browsing and selecting matches easier than a command-line workflow. A third-party guide names dupeGuru and Czkawka as open-source Windows options, but that mention does not establish their current Windows support, free deletion limits, installer contents, or deletion behavior. Before installing any utility, check its current official download source and terms, confirm that both scanning and deleting are free for your intended use, and make sure it shows full paths and lets you choose which copy to retain.

Windows 10 support status

Duplicate-file cleanup is separate from Windows servicing. Microsoft states that free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended after October 14, 2025. Removing duplicate files does not change that support status.
