To find legitimate UK freebies and rewards, first work out what the offer actually is: a gift available to many people, a prize only some entrants can win, a discount, a loyalty reward, a free-entry draw, or a time-limited trial. Then confirm it on the promoter’s official site, read the full terms, and check every cost and follow-on commitment before you enter. A message saying “you’ve won” is not proof that you entered or won.

This guide explains how to assess offers, spot misleading claims, and find the right route if a promotion goes wrong. It does not verify any particular offer as currently available.

Know what kind of offer you are looking at

“Freebie” is an umbrella term, not a promise that there are no conditions. Promotions can include discounts, prize draws, incentive schemes and long-term loyalty programmes; the rules and costs depend on the actual offer. The Advertising Standards Authority and Committee of Advertising Practice say that gifts and prizes must be clearly distinguished: a gift is available to all or many, while a prize is awarded to a few.

  • Gift or sample: a benefit offered to all or many eligible people, possibly subject to availability, a purchase, delivery charge or other stated condition.
  • Prize draw: entrants have a chance to win; entry does not guarantee a reward.
  • Discount: a reduced price, often conditional on a code, purchase, date or eligible product.
  • Loyalty reward: a benefit earned through qualifying activity, such as spending or collecting points. Check exclusions, expiry and redemption conditions.
  • Free trial: time-limited access to a service. Check whether it automatically becomes a paid subscription and when billing begins.

If all or a significant proportion of participants receive an award, presenting it in a way that makes it sound like a chance-based prize can mislead. The offer should tell you whether the benefit is guaranteed or depends on winning.

How to check whether a freebie or reward is legitimate

1. Verify the promoter and offer independently

Find the organisation responsible and reach the promotion from its official website or verified channel. Do not use a phone number, link or email address supplied only in a message you suspect may be fraudulent. Look for the offer’s current terms on the promoter’s own site and check that the dates and details match the message or advert.

Be especially cautious if a message claims you have won but you do not remember entering. A headline, countdown or “final notice” does not establish that you won. Advertising guidance says promotions must not falsely imply that someone has won or exaggerate the chance of winning.

MasterCard Physical Gift Card – $100 (plus $5.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.

2. Read the complete terms before entering

Check the conditions before submitting details, making a purchase or signing up. Significant conditions should be clear enough to inform your decision, and promotion terms should be accessible before or at entry in a form you can retain. Save a copy or screenshot of the advert and terms in case the offer later changes or is not honoured.

  • Who is eligible, and are there age, location or other restrictions?
  • When does the offer open and close? Is there a limit on entries?
  • Is a purchase, call, message, account or marketing sign-up required?
  • For a draw, how are winners selected and notified?
  • What is the prize or reward, when will it be delivered, and is there a cash alternative?
  • What data will you provide, and do the terms describe marketing or other follow-on contact?

3. Add up every cost and commitment

Look beyond the word “free.” Check for postage or delivery charges, paid calls, a qualifying purchase, recurring fees or any other cost. Competition and Markets Authority guidance lists as a banned practice describing something as free when the consumer must pay beyond the unavoidable cost of responding and collecting or paying for delivery. The guidance also identifies falsely telling someone they have won when claiming requires payment or incurs a cost as a banned practice. Read any stated delivery charge rather than assuming that “free” means there can never be a cost.

For a trial, note its length, the date it ends and what happens next. If signing up automatically enrols you in a subscription, that must be made clear in the advertising. Check the cancellation method and timing in the provider’s terms so you can decide whether the trial suits you.

4. Check how a draw works

For a prize draw, look for an explanation of how winners are chosen and how the advertised prizes will be awarded. ASA guidance expects selection through a verifiably random computer process or an independent observer, and says the stated prize should be awarded or a reasonable equivalent. If odds or allocation information is available, use it to understand what the promotion actually offers; a large headline prize count alone does not tell you your likelihood of winning.

Free-entry routes and UK competition rules

Some draws offer both paid and free entry. Before paying, look for the free route and compare how easy it is to use. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s voluntary code for prize draw operators says the free route should be clearly promoted, no less convenient or accessible, and no more expensive than standard communication costs. It also says free and paid entries should have equal chances of winning each available prize and be treated equally in allocation.

The code is voluntary good practice, not a substitute for consumer, advertising or data-protection obligations. Its prize-draw provisions describe coverage in Great Britain; the Gambling Commission notes that Northern Ireland has separate lottery-law provisions. Do not assume that every competition with a question is automatically lawful. The Commission distinguishes free draws from prize competitions: a prize competition must require skill, knowledge or judgement to a level that deters a significant number from entering or prevents a significant proportion from winning. A simple multiple-choice question typically does not meet that threshold. Formats that fail the statutory conditions can risk being classed as illegal lotteries.

Warning signs that an offer may be misleading

  • An unexpected winning message: you do not recall entering, or the message pressures you with a deadline. Verify through the promoter’s official site rather than the message’s contact details.
  • A fee to claim a supposed prize: a claim that you have won paired with a payment demand or costly call is a serious warning sign.
  • A hidden free-entry route: a covered dual-route draw makes the free method hard to find, less convenient, more expensive or less favourably treated than paid entry.
  • Unclear or unavailable terms: the terms are broken, inaccessible before entry, or appear to change after people have entered. ASA guidance says terms should be easily accessible during the promotion and changes should be avoided.
  • A trial that conceals paid continuation: the promotion does not clearly explain automatic subscription enrolment or what happens when the trial ends.
  • Confusion between a gift and a prize: the advert implies everyone gets something when only a few entrants can win, or suggests a prize is guaranteed when it is not.
  • Inflated-sounding prize claims: the advert emphasizes a large number of prizes but provides no useful explanation of allocation or likelihood of winning.

These are reasons to pause and verify, not proof by themselves that every promotion is unlawful. For example, the ASA’s guidance cites one particular promotion in which only 0.56% of the prizes available were awarded; that case is not a general probability for UK prize draws.

What to do if a promotion goes wrong

If a reward is not delivered or you believe an offer was misleading, keep the advert, the terms as shown when you entered, your confirmation and any correspondence. Contact the promoter using details on its official site and explain what the offer promised and what happened. The appropriate advice or complaint route depends on the issue and where in the UK you live; not every dispute is handled by the same regulator.
