Choose a repair shop by how well its experience matches your exact device and fault—not by a high star rating or a quick promise. Before handing over your phone or laptop, compare the diagnosis, written estimate, parts, repair-specific warranty, turnaround and data-handling policy. Get the scope and price in writing, and approve any added work before it begins.
Start with the device and the problem
Phone and laptop repairs call for different skills, and even two faults on the same model may require different expertise. When you contact a shop, give the exact model if you know it and describe what happens, when it started, any error messages, and whether the device was dropped, exposed to liquid, repaired before, overheating or failing intermittently.
For a complex fault, ask whether the shop regularly works on that model and problem. A useful answer explains what the shop can tell from your symptoms, what requires testing and what risks might affect the outcome. A confident promise made without examining a complicated fault is less reassuring than a clear explanation of what is still unknown. As iFixit guide author Elizabeth Chamberlain puts it, “That uncertainty is a good sign. Repair is troubleshooting, not fortune-telling.” iFixit’s guide to finding a local repair shop was published May 20, 2026.
If the shop says it does not handle your repair, or advises that repair may not be worthwhile, treat that as useful information—not an automatic reason to disqualify it. A shop that can explain its limits is preferable to one that claims to do everything but cannot describe its approach.

Compare shops using the same questions
Ask each candidate the same questions so you can compare the actual terms, not just the headline price. iFixit recommends asking, “What would you do if this were yours?” The answer can reveal how the shop weighs cost, risk and the likely result, but it should complement—not replace—a written estimate.
- “Have you worked on this model or problem before?”
- “Do you charge a diagnostic fee? What does it include, and does it apply toward the repair?”
- “What parts do you use: OEM, aftermarket, refurbished, salvaged or donor parts?”
- “Will I get a written estimate before work starts?”
- “Will you contact me for approval before going over the estimate?”
- “What warranty do you offer on these parts and this labor, and what does it exclude?”
- “What happens if the repair doesn’t fix the problem?”
- “What is the likely turnaround, and how will you update me if it changes?”
- “How do you handle my data and privacy? Do you need my passcode, and why?”
- If preserving files is the priority: “Can you assess data recovery before replacing parts or erasing the device?”
A diagnostic fee is not automatically a warning sign. Find out what the fee pays for and whether it is credited toward a repair. A quote should also say what work and parts it covers, what could change it, and how the shop will get your approval before exceeding it.

Read estimates, parts and warranties closely
Check what the estimate covers
Ask for the diagnosis, proposed work, part category, total estimate and expected turnaround in writing before authorizing the repair. If testing may reveal additional work, ask the shop to stop and contact you before doing anything outside the estimate. Clarify whether you will owe a diagnostic fee if you decline the repair and what happens if the proposed fix does not resolve the fault.

“Replacement part” does not identify its source or condition. Ask whether the shop plans to use an original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM), aftermarket, refurbished, salvaged or donor part, and whether the estimate changes if you choose a different option. The category alone does not tell you whether a part is right for your repair; ask what the shop recommends and why.

Get the warranty terms for this job
Ask what the warranty covers on the specific parts and labor, how long coverage lasts, and what exclusions apply. Find out how to make a claim and what the shop will do if the original symptom returns. Do not assume a warranty on a replacement part covers unrelated failures or data loss.
For customers in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission says a manufacturer generally cannot require a consumer to use particular parts or services to maintain warranty coverage unless those parts or services are provided for free or the manufacturer has an FTC waiver. That rule does not mean every repair is free or that a manufacturer must cover an unrelated failure. Read the written warranty and check how its terms apply to your situation. The FTC’s warranty guidance is dated July 2023. Warranty law varies by country; iFixit notes that right-to-repair laws differ across jurisdictions.

Protect your data before handoff
Back up the device if you can. Before handing it over, ask what access the repair requires and why. Remove your passcode or use a repair or privacy mode when your device supports one, but do not share a passcode without understanding what the shop needs to do and what access it would allow.

If recovering irreplaceable files matters more than getting the device working again, say so before authorizing work. Ask whether the shop can assess recovery before replacing parts or erasing the device. Data recovery is not guaranteed; liquid damage, board-level faults and recovery work may call for a specialist. Do not authorize a reset or other work that could erase files until you understand the risk.

Use reviews and recommendations as evidence, not a verdict
Ask friends, family or a local repair group whether they have used the shop for a similar device or fault. iFixit’s local-shop guide recommends asking people who have firsthand experience. In 2023 testimony to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, iFixit witness Kris Wiens compared the search to finding a reputable auto mechanic and also recommended asking friends and family. Wiens’s written testimony was dated July 18, 2023.
Read both positive and negative reviews, looking for repeated, specific patterns rather than treating one unhappy review as decisive. Recurring reports of surprise fees, poor communication, repeat failures, missing parts, lost data or unexplained delays deserve follow-up. Ask the shop how it handles the issue that reviewers describe and compare its answer with the written terms it offers you.
Recognize reassuring and concerning signs

- The shop asks about the device and symptoms before recommending a fix.
- It explains the diagnosis and what still needs testing in plain language.
- It provides a written estimate and gets approval before added work.
- It identifies the part category, repair-specific warranty and data risks.
- It explains likely timing and how it will communicate changes.
- It is candid when the repair is uneconomical or outside its skill.
Reasons to pause
- A firm promise or quote for a complex fault before the shop has examined or tested the device.
- Pressure to decide immediately or refusal to explain the proposed parts or warranty.
- No written estimate or no clear process for approving extra work.
- A guaranteed data-recovery result.
- Only one expensive assembly replacement offered without a clear explanation of alternatives or diagnosis.
- Repeated review complaints about fees, communication or outcomes that the shop will not address.
When a second opinion is worthwhile
Compare another shop’s diagnosis and written terms when the estimate is high, the device is old or unusual, liquid damage is involved, or the data is especially important. Ask whether the second shop has experience with the same model and fault; otherwise, a lower quote may not be a like-for-like alternative. Weigh the cost of repair against the device’s condition and the importance of the data, using each shop’s explanation of risks and likely outcomes.
Make the decision before you authorize work
Choose the shop that can explain the repair in terms you understand and put the important details in writing. Before you leave the device, confirm the diagnosis or testing plan, estimate and approval limit, parts, warranty, likely turnaround, data access and what happens if the repair does not solve the problem. Keep a copy of the estimate and any written terms.
