To find office jobs that fit, start with tasks you can demonstrate, use them to identify several possible job titles, and compare the duties in real local postings. Titles overlap, so judge each opening by its work, requirements, pace, and schedule—not its name alone. The resources below are U.S.-oriented; verify qualifications and hiring conditions where you plan to work.
Start with evidence of what you can do
Build a short inventory of work you have actually performed. Include paid jobs, volunteer work, school projects, and other settings where you handled relevant responsibilities. Record specific tasks and examples of results rather than relying on broad labels such as “organized” or “good with people.”
- Scheduling appointments, meetings, or shared calendars
- Answering questions, handling calls, or directing visitors
- Maintaining accurate records, files, spreadsheets, or databases
- Preparing documents, correspondence, or reports
- Coordinating people, supplies, or follow-up
- Processing payments or supporting basic bookkeeping
For each task, note the tools or process you used and whether you handled it independently, with guidance, or only observed it. That distinction helps you target roles honestly and identify what you may need to learn.

- Core duties: Which tasks would fill most of the day, and which have you already done?
- Tools and skills: What software, equipment, processes, or accuracy standards are named?
- Sector knowledge: Does the role require familiarity with a field such as healthcare, or is that only preferred?
- Experience and education: Separate stated minimum requirements from preferences.
- Contact and pace: How much interaction with the public or staff is involved? Does the posting suggest a high-volume or interruption-heavy setting?
- Practical conditions: Check location, schedule, work arrangement, and pay if stated.
There is no universal scoring formula in the cited occupational resources. A simple comparison table of your own can help: list each opening across the top and these factors down the side, then mark evidence from the posting rather than guessing from its title. Confirm pay, duties, qualifications, and work arrangements directly with current local advertisements.
Show transferable skills in a targeted application
Once you choose a small set of target roles, adapt your resume to the language of each posting. Pick two or three relevant examples and describe what you did, the tool or process you used, and the outcome when you know it. CareerOneStop’s career-change guide recommends researching target occupations and tailoring resumes and networking to them.
- If you coordinated appointments in another setting, describe calendar coordination, confirmations, and follow-up.
- If you maintained inventory, describe accurate record updates and supply tracking.
- If you answered questions, explain whom you helped and how you routed or resolved requests.
- If you prepared documents or spreadsheets, name the work you completed and the software only if you actually used it.
Be specific without inflating your experience. Do not claim proficiency in software, credentials, or numerical results you cannot support. If you are changing fields, connect your examples to the target role’s duties rather than implying that unrelated experience is identical.
Address skill gaps before investing in training
Look for the same genuine requirement appearing in several target postings. If you lack it, identify the exact gap—such as a software task or sector-specific knowledge—and investigate credible ways to learn it. Do not assume that one certification is mandatory for all administrative jobs: duties and knowledge vary by role, and specialized work such as medical administration may call for knowledge that a general office position does not.
CareerOneStop also lists American Job Centers and local help alongside its career and job-search resources. These can be useful places to explore support in the United States; availability and services depend on location.
Quick Recap
Turn the search into a focused plan

- Use a skills assessment and transferable-skills resource to generate leads, then choose a few job families to explore.
- Search alternate titles and relevant sector terms; do not stop after one title.
- Read current local postings and compare their duties, requirements, contact level, and practical conditions.
- Tailor each application with examples that match the posting, and investigate recurring skill gaps before paying for training.
