To get face-to-face help from the IRS, use its Taxpayer Assistance Center Office Locator to find an office, check that it offers the service you need, and call the appointment number listed for that location. Do not count on being seen as a walk-in. Before traveling, verify the office’s hours and appointment details; bring two original forms of identification, your SSN or ITIN, and records related to your issue.

Open a nearby office’s listing and inspect its services. The IRS appointment script directs taxpayers to check “LOCAL SERVICES” and the dropdown list to make sure the office has the service they need. Do this before arranging travel.

Compare suitable offices by service, distance and directions, hours, and appointment availability. The locator helps with the geographic search, but confirm current schedule and appointment details using the official listing or the office’s appointment line.
How to make an IRS appointment
Call the appointment number shown for the specific office and arrange a visit. TAC services are by appointment; call ahead rather than assuming the office will accept walk-ins. The IRS reports that more than 75,000 taxpayers received help without appointments during Filing Season 2025, but describes that assistance as limited and exceptional. That historical figure is not a promise of walk-in service or an indication of current availability.

Before you go, confirm that the office still provides the service you need, along with its opening hours, directions, appointment time, and any details given when you booked. IRS office information and availability can change, and offices close on federal holidays.

Examples of additional identification listed by the IRS include a state identification card, passport, Social Security card, car title, voter registration card, mortgage statement, lease, utility bill showing your current address, birth certificate, and certain school records. A tribal membership card may be used as an additional form of ID, but IRS guidance says it is not a valid substitute for a driver’s license or passport.

For an ITIN application or renewal, TAC staff can review original documents and certified copies from issuing agencies. The documents are returned at the end of the appointment, and the review is by appointment.
Do not bring food or drinks, cameras, or weapons. Arrive on time and check in: the IRS warns that an appointment may be canceled if you are more than 15 minutes late and have not checked in. Silence your phone.

The IRS says professional telephone interpretation in many languages is available at every office. Deaf or hard-of-hearing visitors who need a sign-language interpreter can call TTY/TDD 800-829-4059 to make an appointment.
When you may not need an in-person visit
The IRS offers online and phone options for common needs such as payment plans, transcripts, payments, refund checks, account information, tax questions, and filing online. Check whether one of those options addresses your issue before booking a trip. The IRS reported 546,000 scheduled face-to-face TAC appointments during Filing Season 2025; that is a historical service figure, not a measure of appointment slots currently available.
