For NFL players, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) offers individual and institutional adviser-program routes. A listing can help you build a shortlist, but it is not an endorsement or a substitute for checking credentials, fees, conflicts, and who will actually manage your financial work.
Start with your players’ association
Ask your association or union whether it currently offers a financial-adviser directory, adviser program, or financial-education service. For NFL players, the NFLPA describes both individual and institutional routes. Its institutional program provides a point of contact to help identify an adviser or team; individual advisers are screened against program standards. Details and access can change, so confirm the current process with the NFLPA Financial Advisors page.
Access to the NFLPA registered-adviser list is limited: the association says active and former players and certified contract advisers can access it, while prospective players may request information. Check the NFLPA’s list-access FAQ for current instructions. If you play another sport or are outside the United States, contact your own association directly; the NFLPA’s program does not establish that another sport or country has an equivalent directory or eligibility rules.
Build a shortlist and compare the people doing the work
Interview several candidates before entering an advisory relationship. Compare their background, experience, qualifications, client base, services, and fees, as the NFLPA’s interview guidance recommends. Athlete experience is relevant, but ask what the adviser personally does for current or former professional athletes rather than relying on a broad claim of expertise.
#1 Best Overall
- How many current or former professional athletes do you advise, and what services do you personally provide?
- Who will make recommendations and handle day-to-day service? Can I meet and verify each person on the team?
- Do you work with outside attorneys, insurance agents, tax specialists, or other professionals? What are their roles, and how are they paid?
- How often will you communicate and report on my plan and investments?
Check the background of every person who may advise on or service your account, including outside professionals. Ask about regulatory actions, customer complaints, litigation, bankruptcies, and disciplinary events. Verify answers against official records for the person’s role and jurisdiction rather than treating a credential or program listing as conclusive.
Verify credentials, registrations, and the limits of program screening
Ask each candidate for their exact legal and professional status, licenses, designations, current registrations, and where you can independently verify them. A designation, such as CFP or CFA, is not interchangeable with a license or registration; clarify which services each qualification permits.
Rank #2
The NFLPA’s current application page says its individual registered-adviser applicants need a bachelor’s degree, CFP and/or CFA designation, at least eight years of licensed experience, required fidelity bonding and professional-liability coverage, and must satisfy criteria concerning fraud-related history, pending customer complaints or litigation, and custody of player funds. These are NFLPA program criteria, not universal legal requirements. The page says the initial application period for the 2027 program has ended and tells applicants to check back for the next cycle; see the current application information for updates.
The NFLPA regulations distinguish among broker-dealers, investment advisers, insurance professionals, and attorneys or accountants, whose permissible program scopes may differ. The rules also expressly disclaim NFLPA endorsement and say the association makes no representation about an adviser’s skill, honesty, or competence. Treat registration as one screening input: verify standing and disciplinary history, request references, and decide whether the person fits your needs. See the NFLPA Regulations and Code of Conduct Governing Registered Player Financial Advisors.

Understand fees, conflicts, and the written agreement
Ask for the full cost in dollars and percentages, how each fee is calculated, who receives it, and whether the adviser, firm, or an affiliate can earn commissions, referral fees, or other third-party compensation. Ask which services are included, how often you will receive reports, how conflicts are handled, and how you can end the relationship.
Before signing, read a written agreement that spells out services and fees. Under NFLPA rules, registered advisers must provide that agreement and itemized statements at least quarterly; the rules also prohibit specified conflicts and require written advance disclosure of certain referral compensation. Those program rules apply to registered advisers under the NFLPA program, not automatically to every adviser. Ask the candidate to explain in writing which duties and protections apply to your proposed relationship.

Protect control of your assets and understand investment risk
Ask who will hold your assets, what authority the adviser would have to trade or move money, and what account statements and controls you will receive. Do not transfer money to an adviser personally as a substitute for an appropriately qualified custodian. NFLPA regulations prohibit a registered adviser from having custody of player funds unless the adviser is a qualified custodian.
Ask how recommendations will account for your assets and liquidity, liabilities, diversification, risk tolerance, objectives, financial sophistication, and relevant tax, estate, insurance, and retirement matters. Require a clear explanation of investment risks, terms, performance reporting, benchmarks, and time periods. NFLPA rules prohibit guarantees about investments and require accurate communication of terms and potential risks; be wary of anyone promising a particular return.

Ask whether the plan fits an athlete’s financial life
Professional-sports income and benefits can require planning beyond a standard investment portfolio. Ask how the adviser will address irregular career earnings, near-term liquidity, taxes, insurance, estate planning, retirement, and player benefits relevant to your sport. The answer should connect these needs to the adviser’s actual services and, where necessary, to qualified tax or legal professionals—not leave you guessing who is responsible.
Use these questions in the interview:
- How will the plan balance spending and liquidity needs against longer-term investing?
- How will you account for liabilities, diversification, risk tolerance, and changes in career or income?
- How will tax, estate, insurance, retirement, and sport-specific benefits work be handled, and who is responsible for each part?
- Which decisions require my approval, and how do you document recommendations and conflicts?
- How are investment risks and performance reported, and which benchmarks and time periods will you use?
These are questions for evaluating an adviser, not a substitute for individualized financial, tax, or legal advice.
