Before selling or giving away an NVIDIA SHIELD TV, copy any local files you want to keep, then use the reset option in Settings. On current menu layouts, go to Settings > Device Preferences > Reset > Reset > Erase everything. The last selection confirms the wipe.
Back up files you want to keep
A factory reset wipes data from the SHIELD and removes device settings. NVIDIA says data associated with a Google account can be recovered, but do not rely on that for files stored locally. If you need to save files, follow NVIDIA’s instructions for transferring content between SHIELD and a computer before resetting.
If you are handing over a removable storage device, decide separately whether to keep it or erase it using the appropriate device or computer. NVIDIA’s cited reset guidance does not establish how every attached or adopted storage device is handled across models and software versions.

Reset from the current Settings menu
- From the Home screen, open Settings > Device Preferences > Reset.
- Select Reset.
- Read the on-screen warning, then select Erase everything to confirm. The SHIELD will reset.
This is the path in NVIDIA’s current SHIELD TV support guide. Menu labels can differ by software generation; use the alternate path below if your device shows Storage & reset.

If your SHIELD shows the older menu labels
- From the Home screen, open Settings.
- Under Device, select Storage & reset > Factory data reset.
- Select Factory data reset again, then select Erase everything to confirm.
This older menu sequence appears in NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide. The reset is destructive: NVIDIA says it wipes data from the SHIELD and removes device settings. Google-account-associated data can be recovered, according to the guide.
Google account removal is a separate option
NVIDIA documents removing the Google account separately at Settings > Accounts > select the Google account email address > Remove account > OK. Its factory-reset instructions do not say that you must remove the account first, so treat this as a separate account-management option rather than a required reset step. How long can the reset take?
NVIDIA’s older user guide estimates 50–70 minutes for a factory reset generally. Its SHIELD Pro section says a full reset can take up to two hours and describes a fast-reset option. These are estimates from that guide, not guaranteed times for every model or current software; a current reset may take a different amount of time.

The cited NVIDIA instructions do not provide a general button-combination or recovery-menu reset procedure for a SHIELD that cannot boot into Settings. For that situation, consult NVIDIA SHIELD TV Support rather than trying an undocumented reset method.
