To factory reset a Galaxy S20 Ultra that you can unlock, open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset, review what will be erased, then tap Reset and Delete all. A reset removes personal data, so back up anything you need and make sure you can access the Google and Samsung accounts linked to the phone before you begin.
What a factory reset does—and when to use one
A factory data reset restores the phone to its factory settings and removes personal data. Samsung warns that erased information may not be recoverable, so treat the reset as a wipe, not as a backup or a guaranteed repair.
If you are troubleshooting a phone that will not start, Samsung advises using a factory reset only as a last resort after earlier troubleshooting steps. A reset cannot be assumed to fix a hardware fault or resolve account-verification requirements.

Choose a backup method you can access and check that it covers the data you care about. Samsung documents Samsung Cloud, Google backup, Smart Switch to a Windows PC or Mac, and supported external storage. The available data and restore steps vary by service; do not assume every app or data type will return. Samsung’s backup and restore guide explains the supported options.

- Cloud backup: Samsung Cloud can store supported data such as call logs, messages, and settings; Google backup is another option. These routes depend on account access and, where applicable, an internet connection.
- Computer backup: Samsung Smart Switch can back up to a Windows PC or Mac and restore from that backup after the reset.
- External storage: Smart Switch can use supported external storage, including a USB OTG flash drive or storage drive. Confirm the phone and storage device are compatible; a drive is optional, not required to reset.
Before continuing, decrypt any encrypted microSD card in use. Samsung warns that after the reset the phone will not be able to read an encrypted card unless it has been decrypted. Samsung also says a network connection is needed to log out of a Samsung account before completing the reset.
Reset the Galaxy S20 Ultra from Settings
- Back up the information you want to keep and confirm that you can sign in to the relevant accounts.
- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Review the information shown on the screen. Tap Reset, then tap Delete all.
- If prompted, enter the screen-lock credentials and the password for the Samsung account signed in on the device.
- Allow the phone to restart. It should return to the initial setup screen.
Menu wording or layout can vary with software version and region. Samsung’s Galaxy factory-reset instructions document this Settings route.

Use Recovery if you cannot open Settings
If the phone cannot start or Settings is inaccessible, Recovery is a fallback—not a less destructive reset. Samsung’s Polish support instructions describe a Recovery-key route for S20 devices without a physical Home button. The page is regional, so check Samsung’s instructions for your device and region if the combination does not work.

- Use the Recovery key combination documented for the S20 series in Samsung’s Polish Galaxy reset guide. For the S20 models covered there, the instructions use the volume-up, Home, and side buttons.
- In Recovery, use the volume keys to highlight the wipe or factory-reset action and the power key to select it, following the on-screen prompts.
- When the operation is complete, choose the option to restart the device if offered.
The cited guide is regional and does not establish that every Galaxy S20 Ultra variant or firmware responds identically. Samsung recommends factory reset as a last resort for boot-loop issues; see its boot-loop troubleshooting guidance before choosing this route.

Be ready for Google or Samsung account checks
After a reset, Google Factory Reset Protection may ask for the Google account previously registered on the phone. In applicable cases on Android 9 and later, Samsung says the previously configured screen lock may also be offered to verify ownership. A Samsung account password may be required to complete the Settings reset if an account is signed in.
If you are handing the phone to someone else, confirm you can access the accounts associated with it and follow Samsung’s current account-removal guidance before erasing. Do not try to bypass ownership verification: the reset does not remove those protections.
