For a standard ZIP file, use your computer’s built-in tools: choose Extract All… in Windows or double-click the ZIP in macOS. On Ubuntu, use the unzip command and specify a destination if you do not want the files placed in your current folder. If extraction fails, check the archive format, encryption support, available storage, and whether the archive is damaged.
Unzip a file in Windows
Use File Explorer

Open File Explorer and locate the ZIP archive.

Right-click the archive and select Extract All….

Choose where to put the extracted files, then follow the prompts.
You can also open a zipped folder and drag an individual file or folder to another location. Microsoft documents these steps for Windows. Microsoft’s ZIP and unzip instructions
Formats and encrypted archives
Windows 11 version 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR through its built-in compression and decompression features. Microsoft says built-in operations on encrypted archive files are not supported; for an encrypted archive, it suggests considering a non-Microsoft application such as 7-Zip or WinRAR. This format support and encryption limitation are specific to the documented version and should not be assumed for every Windows release. Microsoft’s Windows archive guidance

Extract from the command line
Windows also documents the tar command for listing and extracting .tar, .tar.gz, .zip, and .7z archives. For ZIP files, PowerShell offers the Expand-Archive cmdlet. Unzip a file in macOS
In Finder or on the desktop, double-click the .zip file. macOS expands it in the same folder as the archive. Apple’s instructions for zipping and unzipping files on Mac

Extract a ZIP file in Ubuntu
Ubuntu’s unzip utility can list, test, or extract ZIP archive contents. Without options, it extracts into the current directory and its subdirectories. Use -d to choose a destination directory instead:

List or test an archive
To view the archive’s entries without extracting them, use -l. To test entries, use -t; the utility checks them in memory and compares their CRC values with those stored in the archive:
unzip -l archive.zip

Troubleshoot an extraction failure

Not enough space: Check available storage, including space needed for the expanded contents. Apple specifically recommends this check when a ZIP will not open on a Mac. Apple’s Mac guidance

Possible archive damage: On Ubuntu, run
unzip -t archive.zipto test ZIP entries. If a Mac cannot open a received archive, Apple notes it may have a problem; ask the sender to create and resend it. Ubuntu Noble unzip manual Apple’s Mac guidance -
Files extracted somewhere unexpected: Windows prompts for a destination with Extract All…; macOS places the expanded item beside the ZIP; Ubuntu’s default is the current directory unless you provide
