How to Extract Images From Web Pages depends on whether you need one visible image, the largest responsive image, a decorative background, or several files referenced by a page. For one visible image in Chrome, right-click it and choose Save Image As. If that does not give you the image you need, inspect the page’s HTML, CSS, or loaded resources. For multiple linked assets, GNU Wget can retrieve references found in HTML and CSS, though it is not a way around authentication or site restrictions.
Choose the method that matches the image

Chrome’s documented options for saving an image or a web page are in Download a file – Computer. Saving a page retains a local copy of page content, but it is not the same as selecting and exporting every original image file.
Save one visible image in the browser
- Open the page containing the image in Chrome.
- Right-click the image and select Save Image As.
- Choose a destination and filename, then save.
- Open the file to check its contents, dimensions, and file format.
This is the quickest route when the image is directly available through the page and the displayed rendition is sufficient. If the context menu does not offer a useful save option, or the saved version is too small, do not assume the image is absent. It may be supplied through responsive HTML, a CSS background, or a resource request that is easier to locate in developer tools.
To save a page rather than an individual image, Chrome documents More > More Tools > Save Page As. That is useful when you want a local page copy, but inspect the result: a saved page is not a guarantee that every remote, dynamically loaded, or protected asset has been collected.

Find the image source in HTML
In page markup, an img element’s src attribute identifies an image URL. That URL may be absolute or relative. A relative URL is resolved against the page’s address, so it may not be a complete address when copied on its own.
Do not stop at src when resolution matters. An image may also use srcset and sizes to offer responsive alternatives, and a picture element can provide alternate sources with an img fallback. The browser selects an appropriate candidate for its conditions; the URL currently used for display may not be the largest one. - Inspect the image element in the browser’s developer tools.
- Check its
src,srcset, and nearbypicture/sourceelements. - Compare the available candidate URLs and identify the one appropriate to your intended use.
- Open or save the chosen source, then verify the resulting file and dimensions.
Responsive candidates can have different sizes, crops, or formats. A larger pixel dimension is not automatically the right asset: confirm that the image content is the same and that you are not selecting a thumbnail, alternate crop, or a format your workflow cannot handle.
Find CSS background images and loaded image requests
Not every visual on a page is an img. A decorative or presentational image may be set with a CSS background-image declaration using url(). If searching the markup for img misses the asset, inspect the relevant element’s styles for a background declaration.

Chrome DevTools also exposes resources that a page loads. Open DevTools and look through the Network panel or the Sources panel’s resource tree for image resources. The exact interface can vary by Chrome version, but Chrome’s guidance describes using these panels to inspect page resources: View page resources | Chrome DevTools.
- Open the page and open Chrome DevTools.
- Use Network to examine resources requested by the page, or Sources to browse its resource tree.
- Locate likely image resources and inspect their addresses and responses.
- Open or save the relevant image resource and check that it is the desired asset.
Resource inspection is useful when a page loads an image after scripts run or when a CSS rule points to the asset. It shows resources made available to the browser in that session; it does not guarantee access to resources gated behind a login, blocked by the site, or never loaded in the current page state.

Retrieve multiple linked resources with GNU Wget
GNU Wget’s recursive retrieval can follow resource references in HTML and CSS, including markup references such as href and src, and CSS url() forms. This can help when you need more than one asset linked from a page. Consult the GNU Wget 1.25.0 Manual: Recursive Download for the documented behavior and current command syntax.
Because the exact options you need depend on the target site and task, use the manual rather than copying a generic recursive command blindly. Start with the page you are permitted to access, review the downloaded files, and confirm that the results include the images you need. The documented HTML/CSS reference handling does not establish that Wget can collect every image from JavaScript-driven pages or retrieve content requiring authentication. Do not use it to evade access controls or site restrictions.

Check permissions before reusing an image
Being able to find or download an image does not establish that you may republish it. Check the license and permissions for the particular image before reuse. MDN specifically warns against hotlinking another party’s hosted image without permission: embedding that image can use the host’s bandwidth and leaves your page dependent on a file that could change or disappear. That warning concerns hotlinking; it is not a complete copyright determination for every download or use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I extract images from a page that requires a login?
Only if you have authorized access. A browser session may load resources that an unauthenticated download cannot; this guide does not provide a method to bypass login or other access controls.
Does saving an image mean I can publish it elsewhere?
No. Downloading and reuse permission are separate questions. Check the particular image’s license and applicable permissions before publishing it.
