To extract a thumbnail from an MP4 in the browser, load the file into an HTMLVideoElement, wait for loadedmetadata, seek to the requested time, wait for seeked, draw the decoded frame onto a canvas, and export that canvas as a JPEG, PNG, WebP, Blob, or data URL. Waiting for the seek event is essential: drawing immediately after assigning currentTime can capture an earlier frame or an empty image.
Browser workflow at a glance

The canvas dimensions determine the output dimensions. Keeping the original aspect ratio avoids distortion, while scaling down large source frames reduces memory use and output size.
A reusable thumbnail function
This implementation returns both a Blob and a data URL. It handles metadata errors, invalid durations, timestamps outside the video, large source frames, and encoding failures.

.catch(console.error);The function uses JPEG at quality 0.85 by default. PNG is lossless and useful for graphics or transparency, but usually produces larger files. WebP can be selected with type: 'image/webp' when your target browsers and consumers support it.
Why the events and ready state matter
loadedmetadata
Before metadata loads, duration, videoWidth, and videoHeight may be zero or unavailable. Reading them in the metadata handler lets you clamp the requested time and size the canvas correctly.
currentTime and seeked
Assigning currentTime starts an asynchronous seek. The browser may need to fetch and decode data before the requested frame exists. Wait for seeked before drawing. MDN specifies that drawImage() works correctly with an HTMLVideoElement when its media readyState is greater than 1, which is the state reached after a seek has completed.

Timestamp boundaries
Seeking exactly to the duration can fail or produce an unavailable frame, so the example limits the value to just before the end. Negative values become zero. For variable-duration streams, treat the reported duration as a best effort and handle a load error.
Choosing the output

Use canvas.toBlob(callback, type, quality) for production uploads. Use canvas.toDataURL(type, quality) for a quick preview. Object URLs created from a Blob should be released with URL.revokeObjectURL() when no longer needed.

});Keep the object URL alive until decoding and thumbnail creation finish. Revoking it too early can interrupt the load.
Same-origin MP4
If the page and video share an origin, assign the URL directly. Normal same-origin rules allow the decoded pixels to be exported.

Cross-origin MP4
Set video.crossOrigin = 'anonymous' before assigning src. The video server must answer with an appropriate Access-Control-Allow-Origin header. If it does not, the browser marks the canvas as tainted; toBlob() and toDataURL() then throw a SecurityError. Adding the attribute in JavaScript cannot grant permission that the server has not supplied.

Letting a user choose the frame
For a scrubber, listen for an input event, update a visible time label, and seek. Avoid starting many overlapping captures while the user drags. A simple pattern is to cancel or supersede the previous request and process the latest time after the current seek completes.

Codec and source compatibility
The browser must decode the MP4’s contained video and audio codecs. An “MP4” filename describes a container, not a single codec combination. If a browser cannot decode the file, metadata loading or playback fails. When embedding a video, provide alternate sources so the browser can try them sequentially:

Performance and reliability decisions
- Scale intentionally: A 640-pixel thumbnail is usually cheaper to store and transmit than a full 4K frame. Keep the source aspect ratio.
- Choose one capture: Repeated seeks for a contact sheet should be serialized; wait for each
seekedevent before drawing the next frame. - Show progress: Seeking can require network fetches, especially when the requested frame is far from the current position.
- Separate browser and server responsibilities: Browser extraction is convenient for user-selected files and interactive previews. Server-side extraction is more predictable for unsupported codecs, protected media, batch jobs, or files that cannot be granted CORS access.
- Do not trust a file extension: Handle decode and export errors, and validate uploads before storing or publishing thumbnails.

Can I extract a thumbnail without showing a video element?
Yes. The function creates the video element in memory. It still must load and decode the media before the canvas can receive a frame.
Which timestamp should I use for an attractive thumbnail?
There is no universally best timestamp. Let users choose, or sample several points and select one with your own content-specific rule. The browser APIs provide the frame; they do not judge its visual quality.
Can JavaScript extract a frame from a DRM-protected stream?
Not reliably with this canvas method. Encrypted or browser-restricted media may prevent pixel access even when playback is visible. Use an authorized server-side workflow where the content owner permits extraction.
