Android’s Phone app has no universal ring-duration switch: the carrier controls when unanswered calls are forwarded to voicemail. Check the instructions for your exact carrier and, if you use an MVNO, your network option. Never assume a dial code from another carrier will work.
What controls how long your Android phone rings?
The setting that matters is the network’s unanswered-call timeout—not the length of your ringtone or the number of audible ring cycles. Changing the ringtone may alter how the interval sounds, but it does not extend the time before the network sends the call to voicemail.
Carriers handle this differently. Some let you change the no-answer timeout through conditional call forwarding or a supported dial code; others set it and do not offer a customer control. The options can also vary by the network behind an MVNO plan.
How to check whether your carrier lets you extend it
- Identify your carrier and network. If you use an MVNO, check which network option your line uses; different options from the same provider may have different rules.
- Look up the carrier’s current instructions. Search its support site for changing voicemail ring time, the number of rings, or the no-answer forwarding timeout. Follow instructions only when they name your carrier and network.
- Ask carrier support if the instructions are unclear. Ask whether your line and voicemail setup support a longer unanswered-call timeout, what the maximum is, and which method applies.
- Use only the carrier’s documented method. If a dial code returns an error or does not work as described, stop and contact the carrier rather than trying generic forwarding or reset codes.
Carrier examples: availability depends on the network

These differences are why there is no reliable universal answer in “number of rings.” Audible ring cycles are not a fixed conversion to seconds, and the timeout is a carrier setting.

US Mobile dial-code examples
US Mobile documents these examples for changing ring duration on the specified networks. They are not universal Android codes:
- Light Speed:
**61*18056377243**[seconds]# - Dark Star:
*61*+1[your 10-digit phone number]*11*[seconds]#
For either example, use only one of the intervals US Mobile lists—5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 seconds—and confirm that your line is on the named network before dialing. US Mobile says ring-duration adjustment is available only on Light Speed and Dark Star; Warp is fixed at 30 seconds. Check the provider’s current Advanced setup instructions before making a change.

Do not confuse a longer timeout with forwarding every call
Changing the no-answer timeout is different from forwarding all calls. With full call forwarding enabled, the phone may not ring at all while calls are forwarded. US Mobile warns about this distinction in its Advanced setup guidance. If your goal is to let the phone ring longer before voicemail, use only the carrier’s instructions for unanswered calls.

- Verify that the instructions match your carrier, country, and—if applicable—MVNO network option.
- Check whether the method is intended for your voicemail setup and line type.
- If the code is rejected or voicemail routing changes unexpectedly, stop testing codes and ask carrier support to confirm the supported timeout and restore the correct voicemail routing if needed.
Carrier instructions can change. For example, Verizon’s consumer support guidance says its system-set mobile timeout cannot be extended, while business voicemail products may have separate ring-count controls. Those business features do not establish that consumer wireless voicemail can be changed.
