To extend HDMI on a budget, first measure the route and check the resolution and refresh rate your devices need. A suitably certified HDMI cable is the straightforward choice when one can cover the distance; for longer routes, a transmitter-and-receiver extender kit can carry the signal over Cat5e or Cat6 cable. Neither option is always cheaper: the right choice depends on the exact run, features, and installation requirements.
Choose the extension method for your setup
Start with the distance between the source—such as a computer, game console, or media player—and the display. Measure the cable route, including detours around furniture or through walls, rather than just the straight-line gap. Then check the maximum resolution, refresh rate, HDR, audio, and control features you actually need.
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI cable | A run that a cable of the required performance can serve | Certification tier, length, construction, and device features |
| Cat5e/Cat6 HDMI extender kit | A longer route where category cable can be run between the transmitter and receiver | Exact model’s distance at your resolution and refresh rate, wiring, power, and control features |
There is no single HDMI cable length limit that applies to every cable. HDMI Licensing Administrator says length depends on factors including cable type and construction; its official cable guidance does not specify a universal maximum.
When a certified HDMI cable is enough
Choose a cable based on the performance tier your devices require, not just the connector shape. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s Premium High Speed HDMI Cable certification covers full 18 Gbps bandwidth and includes EMI testing. It is intended for 4K/Ultra HD use cases including 4K at 60 Hz, HDR, and expanded color. That certification category is not interchangeable with Ultra High Speed; verify the label and match the cable to your source, display, and required features. See the Premium HDMI Cable certification information.

For a longer cable run, do not assume that a cable will work simply because it fits both ports. HDMI Licensing Administrator notes that achievable length depends on construction, so check the cable’s stated capabilities and return terms if performance over your exact route is uncertain.
When to use a Cat5e or Cat6 HDMI extender
An extender kit typically has a transmitter near the source and a receiver near the display. The units send the HDMI signal over category cable, but the system is not an ordinary Ethernet network connection: follow the manufacturer’s specified cable path and compatibility requirements. Do not connect the kit through a router or assume any LAN cabling arrangement will work.

Check the route, power, and control needs
- Can category cable follow the route? Confirm that you can run the required cable between the transmitter and receiver and that the installation follows the kit’s wiring instructions.
- Does the kit support your video mode at that distance? A model may support different maximum distances at 4K and 1080p; use the specification for your intended resolution and refresh rate.
- Where will power come from? Some kits list power over cable, while others may require power arrangements specified by their manufacturer. Do not assume the feature is universal.
- Do you need remote control or equipment control? IR extension can help carry infrared remote commands. Some professional systems also list RS-232; choose those capabilities only if your equipment and installation need them.
- Are other required features supported? Check relevant requirements such as HDR, HDCP, audio formats, and chroma subsampling against the exact product documentation.
A practical way to choose without guessing
- Measure the complete route from source to display and note any in-wall or other routing constraints.
- Record the source and display’s required resolution, refresh rate, HDR, audio, and control features.
- Check whether a certified HDMI cable is specified to support those needs over the measured run.
- If the route calls for an extender, compare kits by their transmitter/receiver design and their stated reach at your exact video mode.
- Before buying, verify cable type, wiring instructions, power needs, and any feature-specific compatibility in the manufacturer’s documentation.
The available specifications do not establish a universal price winner or the cheapest configuration. Compare current prices for the cable or complete extender kit that meets your requirements; a lower-priced option is not a saving if it cannot support the run or features.
