Extend Cypress by installing a compatible npm package and registering it in the runtime where it belongs: Node-side setup goes in setupNodeEvents in cypress.config.js or cypress.config.ts; browser-side commands go in a support file. Some packages need both. Installing a package alone does not activate it.
Choose the right extension point
Cypress extensions commonly come as npm modules, but the work they do determines where you register them. Node code runs outside the browser and can access Node and operating-system capabilities. Support-file code runs with the browser-side test environment and is the natural home for custom commands.
| Need | Where it runs | Typical registration |
|---|---|---|
| Run/spec lifecycle hooks, browser launch configuration, screenshots, preprocessing, or Node and operating-system work | Node process | setupNodeEvents(on, config) in the relevant E2E or component configuration |
| Reusable browser-facing test commands | Browser test environment | Cypress.Commands.add() in the support file |
| A package with Node and browser components | Both | Follow its documentation and register each component in its respective location |
Cypress describes plugins as extensions that customize how tests are written, run, and reported. The official plugin directory groups entries by use case and identifies official, community, and deprecated entries. Its directory showed 131 plugins when accessed on October 3, 2026; the count can change.
Install and register an existing plugin
- Find a package for the job. Check the plugin directory for its stated Cypress compatibility, version, update information, and ownership. Community packages are maintained by their own authors, not Cypress.
- Read the package instructions. Confirm whether it requires Node registration, a support-file import, or both. Setup is package-specific.
- Install it as a development dependency. Use your project’s package manager, for example
npm install --save-dev package-name. Replacepackage-namewith the package’s actual npm name. - Register it in the correct place. Call a Node setup function from
setupNodeEvents, import or register browser code from the support file, or do both when the package requires it. - Run a small test. Verify the feature in the Cypress mode and browser where you intend to use it. If startup fails, temporarily remove the registration and rerun to isolate whether the package is involved.
For the package’s exact setup pattern, use Cypress’s plugin installation and registration guide and the package’s own README. Do not assume that a package’s name or directory category tells you where its registration belongs.

Write a Node-side extension
Define setupNodeEvents(on, config) under the relevant e2e or component configuration in your Cypress config file. Cypress invokes it in the Node process, separate from browser test code. It can register event listeners and return a value or promise; if it returns a configuration object, Cypress merges that object into the configuration.
const { defineConfig } = require('cypress')
module.exports = defineConfig({
e2e: {
setupNodeEvents(on, config) {
on('task', {
ping() {
return 'pong'
},
})
return config
},
},
})
In a test, the task can be invoked with cy.task('ping'). The example returns a value so Cypress can resolve the task.
Choose a Node event by the work
before:runandafter:run: run-wide setup and reporting.before:specandafter:spec: work around an individual spec’s lifecycle.before:browser:launch: adjust browser launch options.after:screenshot: process or record screenshot metadata.file:preprocessor: transform spec or support files before they reach the browser.task: let test code request Node work such as database seeding, file access, or external process execution.
See Cypress’s Node Events overview for event behavior and signatures.

Use tasks for bounded Node work
A task registered on on('task', ...) runs arbitrary Node code. It must resolve to a value or explicitly return null if it has no result; returning undefined makes the task fail. Cypress advises against using cy.task() to start a web server. For external commands, Cypress’s task guidance recommends child_process.execFileSync() with arguments supplied as an array rather than composing a shell command string. See the cy.task() documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Add a browser-side custom command
Register custom commands in the Cypress support file, which loads before each spec. Use Cypress.Commands.add() to define a new command; reserve Cypress.Commands.overwrite() for a deliberate change to existing behavior.
// cypress/support/commands.js
Cypress.Commands.add('dataCy', (value) => {
return cy.get(`[data-cy="${value}"]`)
})
// In a spec
cy.dataCy('submit').click()
Choose an abstraction that stays composable instead of making one custom command perform an entire test workflow. For setup, Cypress recommends avoiding repeated UI work when an API request or direct state setup is available.

Retry behavior and TypeScript
If a returned DOM element must participate in Cypress’s retry behavior, consider defining a custom query rather than a command. In TypeScript projects, document the custom command’s signature so editor tooling can provide useful type information. Cypress’s custom commands guide covers commands, overwrites, queries, and typing.
Side-effect-only imports
If your project uses webpack with sideEffects: false, a side-effect-only import that registers a command may be tree-shaken. Cypress documents wrapping registration in an imported function as a workaround: import the function and call it from the support file instead of relying on the import itself to execute registration.

Customize preprocessing when compilation needs change
Cypress’s default webpack preprocessor supports ES2015+, JSX, TypeScript, watching, and caching. Use the file:preprocessor event to customize compilation or use another bundler. The preprocessor runs in Node, so it cannot call Cypress or cy commands.

Preserve source maps when transforming files. Cypress uses them to map stack traces back to original source and show code frames; its documented examples use inline webpack source maps or inline esbuild maps. See the Preprocessors API.
For a reusable preprocessor intended for npm, Cypress describes the cypress-*-preprocessor naming convention and keywords including cypress, cypress-plugin, and cypress-preprocessor.
Check compatibility, ownership, and maintenance
Before adopting a package, weigh whether it already covers the need, whether it supports your Cypress version, who maintains it, and whether its runtime matches the job. A community listing is not a Cypress support guarantee: follow that package’s documentation and direct bug reports to its maintainers. Cypress marks deprecated entries in its directory; prefer an actively maintained option when the feature and compatibility fit.

For a project-specific extension, compare the long-term cost of maintaining custom code with the cost of adding and debugging a dependency. Custom browser commands are suited to browser-facing test abstractions; Node tasks bridge tests to Node and operating-system capabilities.
Troubleshoot plugin and extension failures
- Cypress starts failing after installation: Check the package’s compatibility notes and setup instructions, then disable its registration and rerun the failing test. If the failure disappears only when the extension is disabled, share Cypress and package versions plus a minimal reproduction with the package maintainer.
- A custom command is undefined: Confirm the support file is configured and imports or calls the registration code before the spec uses the command. If using webpack with
sideEffects: false, use Cypress’s imported-function workaround for registration. - A task fails without a useful result: Make sure the task resolves to a value or explicitly returns
null;undefinedis an error condition. - Stack traces point to transformed code: Configure the preprocessor to preserve source maps, preferably inline maps as shown in Cypress’s examples.
- A browser extension no longer loads in standard Chrome: Cypress’s Node Events documentation says Chrome 137 and newer no longer load extensions through
before:browser:launchbecause Chrome removed the--load-extensionflag Cypress relied on. The same documentation says Chrome for Testing or Chromium can still load extensions. Verify the guidance against your installed browser and Cypress versions before relying on it; see the Node Events documentation.

If your need is capturing a website screenshot rather than extending Cypress itself, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
