Urlwatch has three different things you might mean by “export”: save the report from a run, dump the cached history for one job, or preserve the cache database Urlwatch uses to compare page states. Redirect standard output for a report, use urlwatch --dump-history JOB to inspect one job’s cached history, and keep the configured cache file if you want Urlwatch’s comparison history to remain available.
Choose what you need to export

Save the report from a Urlwatch run
Urlwatch prints report information to standard output by default. On a system where the urlwatch command is available, redirect that output to a file:

urlwatch >> report.txtAppending creates a sequence of run reports, not a structured archive of all the snapshots Urlwatch retains internally. If you want notifications sent elsewhere, Urlwatch also supports configured reporters, including email, stdout, shell, Slack, Telegram, Matrix, and Discord. Check the reporter documentation and any service-specific dependencies before setting one up: Urlwatch reporter reference.
Dump the cached history for one job
Use --dump-history with the job identifier accepted by your installed Urlwatch version:

urlwatch --dump-history JOBTo save the command’s output as a separate text artifact:
urlwatch --dump-history JOB > job-history.txtThis is a per-job history command. The documented reference does not promise that its output is a portable, whole-database export or specify a stable interchange schema. Treat the resulting file as the command’s output for your installed version, rather than assuming another tool can import it.

Preserve the cache database
Urlwatch’s cache stores the job state history used for diffing. The documented default is $XDG_CACHE_HOME/urlwatch/cache.db; the command-line option --cache FILE lets you use a different path. If you have configured a custom cache, preserve that file rather than assuming the default path is active.
The command documentation identifies the cache as a SQLite 3 database, but does not provide a complete archival procedure for safely copying a live database, restoring it across versions, or exporting every record to a portable format. The supported practical distinction is simple: keep the cache file for Urlwatch’s own comparison history, and use --dump-history JOB when you need to inspect a selected job.

Keep history when a monitored location changes
A job’s history is keyed to its url value. If you edit the URL directly in urls.yaml, Urlwatch treats it as a new job, without the old job’s history. Use the documented location-change command instead:

urlwatch --change-location https://old.example/page https://new.example/pageThis updates the job’s location while retaining its history. For browser and shell jobs, the command changes the relevant navigate or command value, respectively. See Urlwatch advanced topics for the documented behavior.

Be careful with cache cleanup
--gc-cache RETAIN_LIMIT removes older cache entries while keeping the latest requested number. The documented default retain limit is one, so check the limit before running cache cleanup if you need older local history. Do not assume that saving a report file protects entries removed from the cache.
Troubleshoot missing reports or history
- The report file is empty or missing expected details: Redirection captures standard output only. Check the command’s output and your configured reporters; Urlwatch can be set up to deliver notifications through other channels. The configuration guide documents reporter and display settings: Urlwatch configuration guide.
- The dump does not include every job:
--dump-history JOBis for a selected job, not a documented full-cache export. Run it for the job you need, and retain the cache database for Urlwatch’s full comparison state. - A job has no old history after changing its URL: Editing the URL directly creates a new job identity. If you still have the old location, use
urlwatch --change-location OLD NEWto move it while retaining history. - Older comparisons have disappeared: Check whether
--gc-cachewas run and which retain limit was used. Its documented default is one retained entry. - The command or option is unavailable: Verify the installed Urlwatch version and consult its matching CLI documentation. The cited command reference is for Urlwatch 2.29.
