To export multiple artboards or selected assets in several formats or sizes, use File > Export > Export for Screens. Choose JPEG, PNG, SVG, or WebP according to the artwork, then check the format-specific settings before exporting.
Choose the right export route
Illustrator has two main desktop workflows for web and screen output. Use Export As for a single file; use Export for Screens when you need outputs from multiple artboards or selected assets, especially at multiple sizes or in more than one format.
Export one file
- Choose File > Export > Export As.
- Choose a destination and filename, then select the format.
- If the document contains multiple artboards, select Use Artboards and specify all artboards or a range.
- Select Export, review the format-specific options, and confirm them.
Adobe also documents Save For Web & Devices for PNG and JPEG. Its supported-formats guidance distinguishes that legacy route, which supports GIF, JPEG, and PNG, from Export for Screens, which supports PDF, JPEG, PNG, SVG, and WebP. Use the command available in your installation that matches the output you need. Adobe’s Illustrator export guide and supported-format list describe these options.
Export several artboards or assets
- For artboards, choose File > Export > Export for Screens, then open the Artboards tab and select the artboards to export.
- Choose one or more output formats and sizes, set the available options, and select a destination.
- Select Export.
For selected artwork rather than full artboards, select the artwork and choose Collect for Export. In Export for Screens, open the Assets tab, choose the assets and output formats or sizes, then export. Adobe’s Export artboards and assets for screens guide covers both workflows.

Adobe says PNG and JPEG exports can run in the background. SVG and PDF use the standard process; a batch that combines raster formats with SVG or PDF will not run in the background.
Pick a format for the artwork
Adobe’s guidance is to match the format to the graphic: different image types need different formats for good display and suitable file size. Treat the choices below as starting points, then inspect the exported appearance and file size for your actual destination.

Adobe’s export documentation explains the format options and their controls: How to export artwork in Illustrator. It does not provide a current browser-support matrix or file-size benchmarks for particular projects, so check the requirements of your delivery platform and compare the actual output.
Set up artwork for crisp web output
Work in RGB for web graphics, and use Pixel Preview to see how vector artwork will look when rasterized. Adobe’s web-graphics guidance also recommends pixel alignment for crisp strokes. Inspect the exported graphic at its intended pixel dimensions: resolution and anti-aliasing affect the appearance of raster output.

In the workflow described in Adobe’s guidance, bitmap formats such as JPEG, GIF, and PNG are rasterized at 72 pixels per inch. That is an application-workflow detail, not a universal requirement that every web image must be designed at a particular physical print resolution. For screen delivery, the output’s pixel dimensions and appearance are what you should check. See Adobe’s web graphics best practices (last updated May 24, 2023).
Review SVG and transparency before delivery

SVG is vector artwork represented in XML. Its export options affect how the file is represented and how it behaves in downstream workflows:

- Fonts: review font handling so the result retains the intended appearance.
- Images: decide whether placed images are linked or embedded.
- Object IDs and precision: set these according to whether the SVG needs readable, manageable markup or compact output.
- Minification and responsiveness: review these settings against the way the SVG will be used.
Adobe documents these controls, but they do not establish how a particular browser or application combination will handle every exported file. Validate the SVG in its intended implementation.
Understand the SVG background
Unpainted areas in an exported SVG are transparent; the artboard color does not automatically become a background. If the exported file unexpectedly has a solid background, inspect the artwork for a filled object covering the artboard.

Keep PNG transparency or add a fill
When exporting PNG, choose whether transparent areas should remain transparent or be filled with a selected background color. Confirm the result against the page or design where the image will appear.

- Raster output looks soft or the dimensions seem wrong: verify the intended pixel dimensions, resolution, and anti-aliasing options; use Pixel Preview while designing.
- An SVG has an unexpected background: check for a filled object over the artboard; empty SVG areas are transparent.
- A JPEG looks increasingly degraded: export again from the Illustrator source rather than repeatedly saving a compressed JPEG.
- An SVG differs in another workflow: review font handling, styling, linked versus embedded images, responsiveness, and minification, then validate it in the destination implementation.

Illustrator on the web has a separate route
The Illustrator on the web (Beta) help page updated September 9, 2024, describes Share > Publish and export and lists PNG, JPEG, AiT, Ai, PDF, and SVG. This is a separate interface from desktop Illustrator; because the documentation identifies the web product as beta and is dated, confirm the current controls in your web-app version.
