To export a Cypress test from Chrome, record a user flow in Chrome DevTools Recorder, then use the Cypress Chrome Recorder extension’s export menu to generate a Cypress test script. For multiple recordings or automated conversion, use Cypress’s @cypress/chrome-recorder npm package. Either route produces a starting point: review the generated code and add assertions before relying on it as a maintainable test.
Export one recorded flow from Chrome
- Open the site under test in a regular Chrome tab, then open DevTools. Recorder is designed to record, replay, debug, and measure user flows. See Chrome DevTools Recorder.
- Record the flow. Open the Recorder panel, create a recording, and perform the actions you want the test to cover.
- Install the Cypress Chrome Recorder extension. Find it in the Chrome Web Store and select Add to Chrome. The extension is maintained by the Cypress Team; its instructions are in the Cypress Chrome Recorder repository.
- Open a new browser tab after installation, then open DevTools and return to Recorder. Chrome specifically recommends opening a new tab so the extension’s custom Recorder options appear.
- Export the recording. In Recorder, open the export menu and choose Export as a Cypress Test script (the extension README labels the action Export as a Cypress Test). Save the generated source file.
- Put it in your Cypress project and review it. The extension documents
.cy.jsor.cy.tsfilenames for Cypress 10 and newer. Check your project’s configured spec location; the converter’s documented default iscypress/integration, withcypress/e2eas a fallback. Inspect selectors and commands, run the test, and add assertions for the outcomes that matter.
Chrome’s extension instructions and the extension repository describe the workflow and export action: Recorder extensions and Cypress Chrome Recorder.
Convert Recorder JSON with the CLI
The official @cypress/chrome-recorder package converts JSON recordings created by Chrome DevTools Recorder into Cypress code. Use the panel extension for a single flow you are already recording in Chrome; choose the CLI when you need to convert files in batches, control the output folder, or automate conversion. The package documents Chrome 101 or newer for Recorder JSON export; double-click and right-click support require Chrome 103 or newer.
Install or run without a global install
npm install -g @cypress/chrome-recorder
Or invoke it with npx:
npx @cypress/chrome-recorder
Convert one file or a batch
# Interactive mode
npx @cypress/chrome-recorder
# Convert one recording
npx @cypress/chrome-recorder path/to/recording.json
# Convert matching JSON recordings in a folder
npx @cypress/chrome-recorder path/to/recordings/*.json
# Choose an output folder
npx @cypress/chrome-recorder path/to/recording.json --output=generated-tests
The package documents cypress/integration as its default output location and falls back to cypress/e2e. If neither exists, its README says to create a folder manually or install Cypress in the project. Options include --dry for a dry run, --print to print transformed files, and --force to bypass Git safety checks. Check the package’s README for current usage details.

Use the converter from JavaScript
The package also exposes cypressStringifyChromeRecording for programmatic conversion. Import it from the installed package and pass it a parsed Chrome Recorder recording:
import { cypressStringifyChromeRecording } from '@cypress/chrome-recorder';
import { readFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
const recording = JSON.parse(await readFile('recording.json', 'utf8'));
const source = cypressStringifyChromeRecording(recording);
console.log(source);
Confirm the installed package’s README for the API’s expected input and return details before integrating it into a build script.

What the converter maps—and what still needs work
The package README documents mappings from Recorder actions to Cypress commands. These are conversions of recorded interactions, not proof that the resulting test validates the application’s expected behavior.

For unsupported step types, the CLI should issue a warning. After conversion, check that selectors uniquely identify the intended elements, the commands fit the application’s behavior, and assertions verify the result—for example, that a submission displays the expected confirmation rather than merely clicking the submit button.

Troubleshoot a missing export option
- Make sure you are on a normal web page. The export option is available on web pages, not
chrome://pages. Navigate to the site under test and open Recorder there. - Open a new tab after installing the extension. Chrome’s guide explicitly advises this to load custom Recorder options.
- Check whether an administrator policy blocks the extension. On managed devices, ask the administrator whether Chrome extensions are restricted.
- If you use Chrome 104 or 105, open another DevTools panel first. A known issue hid the export option when Recorder was the first DevTools panel opened; Chrome fixed it in version 106. This issue is specific to those older versions.
These availability notes are in Chrome’s Recorder extension guidance.
