In draw.io, open the diagram and choose File > Export as, then select PNG or SVG. To create a PDF, choose File > Export As > PDF. Set the format options before exporting. Keep the original .drawio file if anyone may need to edit the diagram later.
Choose the right export format
The best format depends on where the diagram will go and whether it needs to remain editable. draw.io’s export guide explains the format options and their trade-offs.
| Format | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Browser viewing, scalable artwork, and print workflows that support vector graphics. | Vector artwork stays sharp when scaled and can include links. SVG exports can include diagram data, but some third-party tools strip embedded XML metadata; pasting an SVG into Office also strips it. |
| PNG | Sharing in documents, slides, and web pages. | PNG is a widely supported raster image and can include embedded XML for reopening in draw.io. It may blur if enlarged significantly. |
| Printing and formal reports. | PDF is suitable for print and can contain embedded diagram data, but the export is one-way and loses interactive features such as links, layers, and tooltips. PDF export requires the export service; self-hosted installations without one can use the print dialog instead. |
For diagrams with fine text and lines, avoid JPEG: its lossy compression can smear details. Keep a separate editable .drawio or XML source if you need a reliable master copy, rather than relying on metadata surviving every recipient’s software.

- Open the AWS architecture diagram in draw.io.
- Choose File > Export as. In the simple editor theme, the command may appear as Export As.
- Select PNG or SVG. For a PDF, choose File > Export As > PDF.
- Review the available options for your chosen format, then export. The advanced export dialog can set zoom, output width and height, DPI, transparent background, border width, and whether to include the grid.
- If the recipient may need to edit the diagram, keep the source file or enable the option to include diagram data in the PNG or SVG, where offered. Check that the receiving workflow preserves SVG metadata if you depend on it for editing.
What to check before sharing
- For scaling: SVG is generally the better choice when the receiving app supports it; PNG can lose sharpness when enlarged.
- For printing or reports: PDF is designed for print, while SVG is an option when the recipient’s software handles vector graphics correctly.
- For editing: Send the
.drawioor XML source, or include diagram data in a supported PNG or SVG export. An image or PDF alone may not preserve the editable source or interactive behavior. - For downstream compatibility: Confirm how the recipient’s software handles SVG and its embedded metadata before depending on either vector fidelity or editability.
If PDF export fails
Use draw.io’s print workflow as a fallback: choose File > Print, select all pages, then choose Print to PDF or Save as PDF in your system’s print dialog. This is particularly useful for self-hosted installations without the PDF export service.

Use current AWS architecture icons
Start with the official AWS Architecture Icons page for product icons, resources, and diagramming tools. AWS says customers and partners may use its toolkits and assets in architecture diagrams and other materials. It also cautions that third-party libraries can contain legacy icons, so check that the library you use is current.
AWS describes its icon-package release cadence as Q1 (end of January), Q2 (end of April), and Q3 (end of July), with no Q4 releases. That schedule is a stated cadence, not a guarantee that every package was released on time; check the AWS page for the latest available package. AWS lists draw.io and Cloudcraft among its diagramming tools. Cloudcraft’s current pricing page is in the Datadog context, but it does not establish which export formats are available on which plans. Check Cloudcraft’s current product information or your account before relying on a specific export option.
