1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWait until the data request has finished and React has rendered the resulting content before starting the PDF export. For a browser print flow, disable the export action while data is loading; if you need a final state change just before printing, use a Promise-returning onBeforePrint handler and resolve it after React has committed the update. Use a separate PDF-generation workflow if the file must be created and downloaded without opening the browser’s print interface.
Choose how the PDF should be created
The right implementation depends on whether users can save through the browser’s print dialog or the application must generate a file directly. react-to-print prints a selected React component. Its README says it does not directly download a PDF without the print preview; a custom print handler can instead pass the gathered content to a separate PDF-generation library.
| Route | When it fits | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Browser print | The user can review print settings and choose Save to PDF. | The browser’s print interface is part of the workflow. |
| Client-side PDF generation | The application needs to generate and save a PDF through its own code flow. | Use a PDF-generation library in a custom handler; react-to-print does not itself provide a direct-download PDF flow. |
| Server-rendered document | The document can be generated from a server-side React tree. | Choose the React server-rendering API carefully; static rendering APIs differ in how they handle suspended content. |
Wait for the data and the React update
Do not start export merely because a request was initiated, or immediately after calling a state setter. A state setter schedules an update; it does not prove that the new DOM is already present. Track the request’s loading state and expose the export action only when the data-backed UI is ready.
- Start the data request and set a loading state.
- On success, store the response in React state and render the content from that state.
- When loading is false and the required content is present, enable the export action.
- If export preparation itself changes React state, coordinate the print step with a Promise from
onBeforePrint; resolve it only after the updated UI is ready.
The react-to-print README documents Promise-based onBeforePrint coordination and notes that React state updates are asynchronous.

Browser print example with react-to-print
This example starts with the report unavailable, loads it from an API, and enables printing only after the response has been rendered. It uses the current documented hook-style pattern; check the installed react-to-print version because its API can change.
import { useEffect, useRef, useState } from "react";
import { useReactToPrint } from "react-to-print";
export default function ReportPage() {
const reportRef = useRef(null);
const [report, setReport] = useState(null);
const [loading, setLoading] = useState(true);
const [error, setError] = useState("");
useEffect(() => {
const controller = new AbortController();
async function loadReport() {
try {
setLoading(true);
setError("");
const response = await fetch("/api/report", {
signal: controller.signal,
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Request failed: ${response.status}`);
}
const data = await response.json();
setReport(data);
} catch (err) {
if (err.name !== "AbortError") setError(err.message);
} finally {
if (!controller.signal.aborted) setLoading(false);
}
}
loadReport();
return () => controller.abort();
}, []);
const printReport = useReactToPrint({
contentRef: reportRef,
documentTitle: "report",
});
return (
<main>
{loading && <p>Loading report…</p>}
{error && <p role="alert">Could not load report: {error}</p>}
{!loading && !error && report && (
<>
<button type="button" onClick={printReport}>
Print or save as PDF
</button>
<article ref={reportRef} className="report-print-area">
<h1>{report.title}</h1>
{report.rows.map((row) => (
<p key={row.id}>{row.label}: {row.value}</p>
))}
</article>
</>
)}
</main>
);
}
The contentRef option shown here is version-sensitive. If the installed release uses a callback such as content: () => ref.current, follow that release’s README rather than mixing APIs from different versions.

When printing requires one last React update
If preparation changes component state—for example, expanding a print-only detail region—return a Promise from onBeforePrint and resolve it after React has rendered the new state. Do not resolve immediately after calling a setter.

const [printReady, setPrintReady] = useState(false);
const resolvePrintRef = useRef(null);
const printReport = useReactToPrint({
contentRef: reportRef,
onBeforePrint: () =>
new Promise((resolve) => {
resolvePrintRef.current = resolve;
setPrintReady(true);
}),
});
useEffect(() => {
if (printReady && resolvePrintRef.current) {
resolvePrintRef.current();
resolvePrintRef.current = null;
}
}, [printReady]);
In a real component, reset printReady at an appropriate point if the preparation must run again, and ensure every path that can reject or cancel preparation also settles its Promise. The library’s README describes the asynchronous hook; exact options depend on the installed version.
Set up the printable content and styles
Attach the ref to the region that should appear in the print output, not to a surrounding page whose controls and navigation should be excluded. Print styles should target elements that exist in the print DOM. Styles that rely on an unprinted ancestor may no longer match.

Inspect the result with representative content: long tables, images, fonts, page breaks, and portrait or landscape needs. Print CSS hints and dialog settings can be handled differently by browsers, so verify in the browser and settings your users rely on. The react-to-print README does not establish identical output across browsers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When to use React server rendering
Server rendering is a separate route from printing the already-loaded client page. React’s prerender API waits for suspended data before resolving and is intended for static server-side generation. By contrast, renderToStaticMarkup returns non-interactive HTML and, if a component suspends, emits its fallback immediately rather than waiting for that content. Do not substitute one API for the other when the PDF document depends on pending Suspense content.

These APIs produce HTML, not a finished PDF by themselves. A server-side PDF pipeline still needs a step that turns the rendered document into a PDF.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect PDF content
- The PDF is blank or shows a loading message: keep export disabled until the request succeeds and the data-backed component is rendered. Check that the exported ref points to that rendered region.
- The PDF misses a last-minute state change: do not assume a state setter updates the DOM synchronously. Return a Promise from
onBeforePrintand resolve it after the React update has committed. - Styles disappear in print: check selectors for dependencies on ancestors outside the printed region; target the printed nodes directly and review the print DOM.
- The PDF opens a print dialog instead of downloading: that is the browser-print route. Use a custom PDF-generation workflow if direct file generation is required.
- A Suspense fallback appears in server-rendered output: check which API is used.
renderToStaticMarkupemits the fallback when a component suspends;prerenderwaits for suspended data. - Pages break badly or differ by browser: verify print CSS, content length, fonts, images, orientation, and the browser’s print settings using the actual report.
- The print callback option is rejected or the ref is empty: verify the API against the README for the installed react-to-print release; do not assume option names from another version apply.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is a screenshot of a data-loaded webpage rather than a PDF of a React component, ScreenshotNeo can return a PDF from one request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a React PDF-rendering library. The API call below captures https://stripe.com; replace it with the page URL you need. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -d format=pdf -o shot.pdf
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does react-to-print create a downloadable PDF by itself?
No. Its documented flow uses the browser’s print interface; direct PDF creation needs a separate PDF-generation workflow.
Can I export while the API request is still pending?
Wait for the request and rendered data-backed content first; exporting earlier can capture incomplete content.
