In STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, 1943 takes Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo to Minami, Osaka, where they reunite and work together. The announced gameplay makes exploring the district more than a change of scenery: time spent in town connects to Makoto’s growth, while ideas gathered from its streets can feed the showbusiness system. The details below describe officially announced features, not a hands-on guide.
What is Minami’s role in the 1943 chapter?
Minami is the third of the game’s five era-and-city sections. Xbox’s May 2026 story recap says Makoto and Yu reunite there and work together. It frames the district as an entertainment hub, with a bustling public face and conflict among underworld groups behind the scenes. Xbox Wire’s recap and SEGA’s May 2026 overview place Minami within the broader story of five cities and five eras.
What does Minami look like in the game?
SEGA’s September 2026 overview describes a district shaped by both entertainment and wartime pressure. Its streetscape includes modern buildings and theaters, busy main roads, dimmer backstreets, wooden shops, and market-like areas. The same overview depicts shortages and wartime controls, with residents’ clothing reflecting the period. This is the game’s announced portrayal of 1943 Minami, not a complete historical account of Osaka. SEGA’s TGS update provides the most detailed official description of the setting.
How does exploring Minami affect Makoto?
SEGA says ordinary town activities—including walking around, eating, and entertainment—are connected to character growth. How Makoto spends time in each era affects his abilities and the skills he can unlock. The announcement does not establish a complete activity checklist or say that every listed activity is unique to Minami, so treat these as broad exploration and progression hooks rather than a district-specific completion guide.

How do Minami’s streets connect to showbusiness?
Makoto’s showbusiness work is presented as an active performance system. The announced loop includes publicizing a show to attract customers, selecting music and singers, choosing stage effects, and directing cues during the performance, with revenue as a goal.
Find musical inspiration around town
SEGA says Makoto gathers inspiration from the city and shares ideas with a composer, who uses them to create songs or arrangements. That makes Minami’s streets part of the creative premise as well as the setting: exploring can supply ideas for the music tied to Makoto’s career. Xbox Wire attributes to game director Mikinobu Abe the description of Makoto’s “keen ability to find the music in everyday life, [memorizing] the sounds as ideas for future compositions”.
