Explain a resume gap accurately and briefly, disclose only what you are comfortable sharing, and bring the focus back to your relevant skills and readiness for the job. On a resume, a dated one-line note may be enough; in an interview, give a concise answer if asked. You do not need to provide intimate health or family details.
How do I explain a gap in my resume?
There is no universal length that turns time away from work into a resume gap. Executive resume writer and job-search strategist Kamara Toffolo told LinkedIn News that she generally considers more than three months a gap; that is her practice, not an industry-wide rule. Whether you explain a period depends on your timeline, the role, and whether a note would help a reader understand your experience.
If you choose to address it, use a brief, dated line rather than a lengthy explanation. For example:
- Family caregiving: “Career break for family caregiving, 2023–2024.”
- Personal time away: “Career break, 2023–2024.”
- Layoff: “Role ended following company reorganization, 2024.”
- Study or training: “Career break, 2023–2024; completed [course or qualification].”
These are options, not required formats. Use dates that match your work history and include a course, project, or qualification only if you actually completed it. LinkedIn News discusses a dated one-line explanation as one possible approach and emphasizes protecting personal privacy: LinkedIn News, “How to Explain Resume Gaps in 2026”.

What should I say about being unemployed or laid off?
If your job ended in a layoff or reorganization
State the circumstance plainly without suggesting you were at fault or adding details you cannot verify. “My role ended following a company reorganization” gives context; you can then describe the experience you bring to the new role. Do not imply that a layoff was a performance issue if it was not.
If you have been looking for work
You do not need to make a job search sound like employment. If asked, say that you have been looking for a role that fits your experience, then name the relevant strengths you would bring. Do not claim consulting, freelance work, or other employment unless it occurred.

How do I explain a career break in an interview?
Keep the answer consistent with the dates and wording on your resume. Kamara Toffolo advises, “I wouldn’t offer up an explanation unless you’re asked.” If an interviewer does ask, answer the question directly, then return to the role. Career guidance author Thea Kelley puts the approach this way: “Whatever you say, keep your answer short and sweet. Then bring the conversation back to the role you’re interviewing for.” These are practitioner recommendations, not rules that predict how every employer will respond.

- Give the reason in one sentence. For example: “My position ended during a company reorganization.”
- Share a relevant step or update only if true. You might mention a course, volunteer role, project, or that your circumstances have changed.
- Connect your experience to the opening. Name a relevant skill or contribution you are prepared to make.
A complete answer might be: “My position ended during a company reorganization. I’ve been looking for a role that fits my [relevant skill or experience], and I’m ready to contribute that experience here.” Adapt it to your situation rather than using it as a script. Kelley’s interview guidance is available at “How to Answer Interview Questions about Gaps in Employment”.
How much should I disclose about health or family time away?
You can explain the period at a high level without sharing a diagnosis, family history, or other intimate details. For example, “I took time away for a personal matter” may be sufficient if accurate. Add that the matter is resolved or that you are ready to return only if that is true; do not suggest a health issue has ended or a caregiving responsibility has changed when it has not.
LinkedIn’s guidance emphasizes confidentiality rather than requiring detailed disclosure. A return-to-work resource also discusses approaches for people coming back after an extended break: LinkedIn Premium, “Top 10 Job Search Blog Posts” (PDF).

Include an activity when it is real and helps show relevant skills or experience. Depending on your circumstances, that could be freelance work, volunteering, coursework, training, or a temporary assignment. Label it accurately: unpaid volunteer work is not paid employment, and a short course should not be presented as a qualification you did not earn. If nothing relevant occurred, a simple break note—or no explanatory line—may be more accurate than filling the space with unrelated activity.

- Check that your dates and explanation are truthful and consistent across your resume and interview answer.
- Keep personal details to the level you are comfortable disclosing; a brief explanation is generally enough.
- Describe only work, study, volunteering, or other activities that actually happened.
- Prepare a concise answer that turns back to the skills and experience relevant to the job.
