The quickest way to add USB ports to a desktop PC is to connect an external USB hub. If you want an internal upgrade, a PCIe USB expansion card can add ports through a compatible motherboard slot. A USB-C dock or a front-panel module may also fit, depending on your PC, case, and the features you need.

1. Connect an external USB hub

A hub is the simplest choice when you want more ports without opening the PC. Plug its upstream cable into a USB port on the computer, then connect your accessories to the hub. Before buying, check that the hub’s upstream connector fits your PC and that its downstream ports match your devices.

  • Data speed: Compare the hub, cable, computer port, and peripherals. USB-IF lists USB 3.2 transfer rates of 5, 10, and 20 Gbps. A connected product operates at the lowest common speed capability, so a faster hub cannot make a slower host port or cable run faster. USB-IF’s USB 3.2 overview also describes backward compatibility.
  • Power: Check whether the hub has its own power supply if you plan to connect devices that need more power. Do not assume every hub can power every attached device.
  • Port layout: Choose the number and types of ports you need, such as USB-A or USB-C, and consider whether the hub will be easy to reach where you plan to place it.

2. Install a PCIe USB expansion card

A PCIe card adds USB ports inside the desktop by using an available PCIe slot on the motherboard. It is a more involved installation than a hub, but it can be a practical option when external ports are not enough and the PC has a compatible slot.

Check the card’s required slot, case bracket, port types, supplemental power connector, and operating-system support before purchase. These vary by model. For example, StarTech.com’s PEXUSB312A2 datasheet describes a card with two USB-A ports rated up to 10 Gbps per port. It calls for a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot; PCIe 2.0 operation is possible at lower performance. The card also has a SATA power header for supplemental power and lists Windows, Linux, and macOS compatibility. Those specifications apply to that model, not to PCIe USB cards generally; check current documentation for the exact SKU.

That does not guarantee that every expansion card works with every PC or Windows configuration. Confirm the manufacturer’s operating-system list and whether a driver is required.

3. Use a USB-C dock

A USB-C dock can add USB ports and, on suitable combinations of host and dock, functions such as charging or display output. The USB-C connector’s shape alone does not promise those features. Microsoft’s USB-C docking guidance treats USB data, Power Delivery, and DisplayPort Alternate Mode as distinct capabilities and includes recommendations for the dock connection.

4. Add front-panel USB ports

A front-panel assembly or drive-bay module can make USB ports easier to reach, but it requires a physical and electrical match. Check that the module fits the case opening or bay and that the motherboard has the correct internal USB header for the module. Consult the documentation for your specific case, motherboard, and module: connector fit, speed, and compatibility are not universal.

How to choose the right option

Option Installation and access What to verify
USB hub External; typically the simplest way to add reachable ports. Upstream connector, downstream port types, speed, cable, and power needs.
PCIe expansion card Installed inside the desktop; uses a motherboard PCIe slot. Available compatible slot, case bracket, ports, supplemental power, and OS support.
USB-C dock External; can combine USB ports with other functions. Whether both the PC port and dock support the needed data, charging, or display features.
Front-panel module Installed in or on the case for convenient front access. Case fit and the correct motherboard header, using the relevant manuals.

Use this checklist before ordering:

  • Count the ports you have and decide how many more you need.
  • Identify the PC’s available USB connections or, for a PCIe card, an open compatible PCIe slot.
  • List the connector types your devices require.
  • Match the computer port, expansion product, cable, and peripheral to the speed you need; the connection runs at the lowest common speed capability.
  • Check whether the devices need more power than a bus-powered hub can provide.
  • Confirm operating-system support and any driver requirements for an expansion card.
