Put your code in the callback passed to page.open(), check that the callback status is success, and then call page.evaluate() to run JavaScript in the loaded page. Call phantom.exit() only after that work (and any later asynchronous work) has finished.

});This hook means that PhantomJS has finished its page-loading process. It does not mean that every single timer, Ajax request, or client-side rendering task used by a modern application has completed. When the site has a later, observable readiness condition, wait for that condition explicitly.
What the page.open callback actually guarantees
page.open(url, callback) starts navigation. PhantomJS invokes the callback when it considers loading finished and passes either success or fail. A success value indicates that no network error was reported; it is not a promise that the application has finished all post-load work.

The callback passed to page.open is the convenient, local form of PhantomJS’s onLoadFinished event. Both represent the same load-finished lifecycle point.

Run code after loading: the complete pattern
- Create a WebPage object with
require('webpage').create(). - Call
page.open()with the target URL and a callback. - Stop on any status other than
success; do not process a failed navigation as if it were a valid document. - Inside the successful branch, call
page.evaluate()for DOM operations. - Only after the result has been used, call
phantom.exit().
For example, this script changes the page title in the page context and returns a serializable object to the outer script:

});The function supplied to evaluate is sandboxed in the page. It can access window, document, and page variables, but not the outer script’s phantom object or its local functions.
Waiting for dynamic content after the load event
Many applications render an initial shell during page load and fill it later with timers, Ajax responses, or framework code. In that case, the right trigger is a condition that represents the content you need, not an arbitrary assumption that the load callback is late enough.
Check for a required element
Poll from the PhantomJS script until a selector appears, and impose a deadline so a broken page cannot keep the process alive forever. The value returned by page.evaluate is a Boolean, which is safe to transfer across the context boundary.

});Choose a selector that changes only when the data you need is usable. A generic body check usually succeeds too early because the body exists before application rendering finishes.

Use a bounded delay only when no condition is observable
If the page exposes no reliable selector or application signal, a short setTimeout can provide extra settling time. Keep the delay bounded and treat it as a fallback: a slow connection can still need more time, while a fast connection wastes the entire delay. A condition-based check is more reliable and usually faster.
Distinguish page readiness from script completion
Do not put phantom.exit() immediately after page.open(). The navigation and callback are asynchronous. Exiting before the callback, a polling timer, or another asynchronous operation completes terminates the process before your JavaScript runs.
Using onLoadFinished instead of an inline callback
For a reusable page handler, assign page.onLoadFinished before navigation. This is useful when several parts of a larger script share one page object or when you want a named lifecycle handler.

page.open('https://example.com');The inline page.open callback is generally clearer for one navigation. The event handler separates navigation setup from response handling, but it does not create a different definition of “loaded.”
Understand the page.evaluate boundary
Only simple, JSON-serializable values should cross between PhantomJS and the page. Strings, numbers, Booleans, arrays, and plain objects work well. Return a DOM node, a function, or a closure and the outer script will not receive a usable equivalent.

Return data, not DOM objects

});Perform DOM traversal inside evaluate, then return the fields the outer script needs. Keep orchestration, logging, timers, and process control outside it.
Pass simple arguments explicitly

Register code before navigation with onInitialized
onInitialized is an earlier lifecycle hook. It runs after the page object is created but before a URL is loaded, so it is suitable for installing listeners that must exist before navigation. It is not a replacement for the post-load callback.

The callback reports fail
PhantomJS uses fail when a network error prevents a successful load. Log the status, avoid calling evaluate against an assumed document, and exit with a nonzero code if your automation treats the navigation as required.
The process exits before JavaScript runs
Move phantom.exit() into the callback that owns the last required operation. For a dynamic page, that may be the callback from a polling timer or an included script, not the page.open call itself.

Content is missing even though status is success
Load completion happened before the application’s asynchronous update. Identify a specific element, attribute, or application flag that marks readiness and poll it with a timeout. If no such signal exists, use a bounded delay and document that it is a compromise.

Convert it inside evaluate to text, a number, a Boolean, or a plain object. The context boundary does not preserve DOM identity or executable functions.
Page console messages are not visible
Messages produced by the page are not displayed in the PhantomJS process by default. Wire the page’s console callback when you need those messages for diagnostics, and keep process-side logging in your outer script.
A timer never finishes
Always include a deadline and clear the interval on both success and timeout. A selector that never appears, a blocked request, or an application error should produce a controlled failure rather than an orphaned PhantomJS process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can one PhantomJS page handle multiple navigations?
Yes. Keep the page object alive and start the next page.open only after the prior callback has finished its work. Reset per-navigation timers and state so a timeout from the previous URL cannot terminate the next one.
How should a script signal failure to CI?
Call phantom.exit(1) on navigation failure or readiness timeout, and call phantom.exit() only on the successful path. The process exit code then distinguishes a completed capture from an automation error.
Does evaluate execute in the same JavaScript scope as the PhantomJS file?
No. It executes in the loaded document’s sandbox. Pass needed values as arguments and return plain serializable data; process controls such as phantom.exit belong outside the evaluated function.
