You can keep posts from selected categories out of WordPress’s main RSS feed while leaving category-specific feeds available. The most controlled approach is to adjust the main feed query with the pre_get_posts hook and WordPress’s category__not_in argument. If you prefer not to maintain PHP code, a feed-control plugin is another option.
Choose how to exclude categories
WordPress offers query arguments for category inclusion and exclusion. For a site-wide change to the main feed, use a query hook and limit it to the intended feed; this avoids unintentionally changing other queries. A plugin may be simpler to configure, but its current behavior and compatibility should be checked.

Exclude categories from the main feed with code
WordPress documents category__not_in as an array of category IDs. The WP_Query reference also documents negative category IDs with the cat argument as another exclusion form. This example uses category__not_in and limits the change to the main feed query:

12and34with the IDs of the categories to omit. These are category IDs, not category names or slugs. - Add the callback to the site’s theme or a suitable code-management location, then verify the behavior on the WordPress version in use.
- Load the main feed and check that posts assigned to those categories no longer appear.
- If you want the categories’ separate feeds to remain available, test those feed URLs as well as the main feed.
The pre_get_posts reference describes the hook as a way to modify query variables before a query runs and demonstrates checking query context. The example’s main-query and feed checks are important: a broadly applied callback can alter unrelated queries. For this code, category__not_in does not include child categories, so account for that behavior when deciding what to exclude.

Use a plugin or feed URL controls
If you would rather configure feed behavior than maintain a PHP callback, the RSS Control listing on WordPress.org describes controls for feed URLs and gives category-exclusion examples. Treat it as an optional route, not a requirement: review the listing’s current compatibility information and test which feeds its settings affect before relying on it.
Keep category-specific feeds and verify the result
WordPress generates category feed links; the implementation is visible in WordPress core’s link-template.php. Excluding posts from the main feed does not mean you should assume every category feed behaves as intended. Check both the main feed and the relevant category feed after changing the query or plugin settings.

- In the main feed, confirm posts assigned to excluded categories are absent.
- In each category feed you want to preserve, confirm the expected posts are still present.
- If you change category assignments later, update the IDs used by the code or revisit the plugin settings.
Do not confuse hiding labels with excluding posts
The the_category_rss hook filters category labels rendered in feed markup. It changes what category labels appear alongside feed entries; it does not remove posts assigned to a category. To omit posts, change the feed query. To alter labels only, use the markup filter described in the WP_Query reference and the core link-template.php implementation.
