To evaluate an esports organization, look past headline revenue or one profitable year. First identify which business the accounts cover; then assess revenue quality, segment margins, cash flow, liabilities, and dependence on sponsors, publishers, leagues, and competitive results. Compare several years on the same reporting basis, and distinguish audited figures from management explanations and industry surveys.
1. Define which business the financial statements cover
Start with the reporting perimeter: the legal entity and activities included in its accounts. A filing may cover one team, a multi-title organization, a parent company, or a larger group that also runs talent management, event production, game publishing, media services, or unrelated businesses. Do not attribute a parent company’s revenue or profit to its esports teams unless the filing reports that segment separately.
Read the financial statements alongside the notes and management’s discussion of financial condition. Record the fiscal year-end, currency, accounting basis, consolidation scope, and whether the figures are audited. Use at least three years of statements where available: a single year can be affected by a roster change, one-off sponsorship, player transfer, championship result, acquisition, or accounting timing.
2. Map revenue and test how durable it is
Build a revenue bridge by source wherever disclosures allow. Potential lines include sponsorship and advertising, publisher or league revenue sharing, media and content rights, prize winnings, player transfers or rental fees, merchandise, digital goods, events, and adjacent services. An SEC-filed company disclosure, for example, describes team revenue from league sharing, prize money, athlete transfer and rental fees, sponsorship, and advertising (SEC filing).

- Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
- Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
- Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
- Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.
For each material line, ask whether it is contracted, recurring, and collected in cash, or contingent on performance, audience size, or renewal. Identify the largest sponsor, publisher, or other counterparty and determine how much of revenue it represents. Check termination and renewal rights, payment schedules, and delivery commitments. A sponsorship may include exclusivity, social and media rights, activations, hospitality, tickets, or merchandising rights—not only logo placement. The Super League filing describes these types of sponsorship deliverables (company disclosure).
Publisher-specific economics should stay publisher-specific. Riot Games says League of Legends teams historically relied mostly on sponsorship, with media rights a much smaller source, and describes changes to digital revenue sharing in its revised model (Riot Games, 2024). That account does not establish the revenue mix for other games or leagues.
A Deloitte Insights survey published in 2022 found surveyed esports teams averaged about 65% of revenue from core esports activities, including sponsorship sales at 37% and prize money at 15% (Deloitte Insights). These are historical survey figures, not audited company results, universal targets, or current market averages.

3. Compare costs, margins, and earnings quality
Separate roster compensation and related costs from event production, content, travel, facilities, and central overhead when the reporting supports it. Examine gross profit and gross margin by segment, then operating income and net income. The key question is whether recurring activity covers recurring costs without owner funding or exceptional prize results.
Company-specific figures illustrate why both the reporting perimeter and margin matter. An SEC-filed company’s annual report filed in 2026 reported consolidated revenue of US$85.3 million in 2024 and US$126.5 million in 2025, while consolidated gross margin declined from 3.5% to negative 1.2%. Its esports team operation reported revenue of US$14.7 million in 2024 and US$11.8 million in 2025; team gross margin was 17.1% and 6.8%, respectively (SEC annual report, 2026 filing). The group-wide revenue and team-segment margins describe different business lines, so they are not directly interchangeable or a benchmark for other organizations.
The same SEC filer reported esports-team gross profit of US$6.6 million in 2023 and US$2.5 million in 2024, with margin falling from 30.6% to 17.1%. Management attributed the decline primarily to lower sponsorship and advertising revenue together with IP licensing revenue (SEC annual report, 2025). Treat that as management’s explanation and check the statements and notes for support; do not assume the stated cause is independently established.

4. Test cash flow, liquidity, and resilience
Profit and cash are not the same. Review cash and equivalents, operating cash flow, receivables and collection patterns, payables, current debt, and committed financing. Estimate runway only when reliable cash and burn figures are available, and state the assumptions behind the estimate. If cash flow or burn is not disclosed, do not manufacture a runway figure from revenue or accounting profit.

Riot Games’ 2024 explanation of its League of Legends esports strategy described a period when capital became harder to access, revenue growth lagged cost growth, and team cash reserves diminished: “Over time, access to capital became limited, revenue growth didn’t catch up to cost growth, and team cash reserves dried up.” (Riot Games, 2024) This is Riot’s account of its league context, not an independently measured finding about every esports team.
5. Inspect debt, liabilities, and financing dependence
Read the balance sheet and notes for borrowings, shareholder loans, lease obligations, deferred revenue, guarantees, related-party transactions, and debt maturities. Compare contractual obligations with cash and collectible receivables. Then ask whether ordinary operations fund the business or whether it repeatedly depends on owners, refinancing, asset sales, or new investment.

Positive equity or an accounting profit alone does not establish that obligations can be paid when due. Cash timing and contractual liabilities matter, and the cited filings and industry evidence do not establish a universal debt or liquidity threshold for esports organizations.

Map exposure by game title, publisher, league slot, sponsor, and other major commercial partner. Review participation or slot costs, revenue-sharing terms, qualification rules, exit provisions, and any consequences of relegation or roster performance. A publisher or league can materially affect access to competition and revenue, but the terms differ by game and competition.
Riot’s 2024 account documents a change in the League of Legends esports strategy and describes historical team economics; it should not be used as evidence for other publishers or leagues (Riot Games, 2024). Seek primary disclosures for the specific title and competition being evaluated.

7. Compare organizations on a like-for-like basis
Do not rank organizations by size alone. Compare dimensions that show both current performance and resilience, using the same reporting perimeter, period length, and accounting basis:
- Revenue concentration and the share that is recurring or contracted.
- Segment gross margins and operating results.
- Cash generated from operations and the reliability of collection.
- Cash runway, if it can be estimated from disclosed cash and burn assumptions.
- Debt burden, maturity schedule, and dependence on refinancing or owner support.
- Stability of publisher, league, and sponsor contracts.
Public disclosures vary in detail, and private organizations may not publish team-level accounts. Mark information as unavailable rather than filling gaps with survey averages or another company’s figures. A sound assessment is a documented view of one organization, entity scope, and period—not a universal pass/fail score.
