To evaluate a fact-checking website, look beyond its verdict: read its methodology, follow the evidence in a published check, assess how the reasoning supports the conclusion, and inspect its disclosures and corrections process. The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles offers a practical benchmark for those checks—but standards alignment is a process signal, not proof that every article is accurate.
What makes a fact-checking website worth evaluating?
A fact-check is an argument about a specific claim, supported by evidence. A label such as “true,” “false,” or “misleading” is only useful if the site explains what it checked, how it investigated the claim, and why the evidence supports its conclusion.
The IFCN Code of Principles is designed for organizations that regularly publish non-partisan reports on the accuracy of public figures’ statements and widely circulated public-interest claims. It sets out commitments concerning fairness, source transparency, funding and organizational transparency, methodology, and corrections. It is useful as a checklist for readers, not as a ranking of websites or a guarantee about an individual fact-check. Read the IFCN Code of Principles commitments.
Compare sites using the same checklist
Review both the site’s policies and its actual articles. A policy page can describe a process; a published fact-check shows how that process is applied. Record what you can locate, along with the page link and the date you checked it.

A simple comparison can mark each item “clear,” “partial,” or “not found.” Use “not found” only to mean you could not locate the information in the pages you reviewed; it does not establish that the organization lacks the practice. Avoid collapsing the results into a single score unless the scoring rules are transparent and justified.
Read the methodology before relying on a rating
Look for a public explanation of how the organization chooses claims, researches them, evaluates evidence, writes and publishes checks, and uses its rating system. A clear method lets readers understand what the site promises to do and compare that promise with an individual article.

The IFCN’s June 2025 Code PDF provides a detailed standards reference, including expectations around what can be fact-checked, source verification, and evidence evaluation. Follow the sources and test the reasoning
Open the article’s important sources rather than stopping at a bibliography. Check that the cited material is relevant, accurately represented, and detailed enough to verify the point being made. A source list alone does not show how evidence supports a verdict: the article should explain what each material source establishes and how the pieces fit together.

- Check the original claim and the context in which it was made or circulated.
- Open significant sources and locate the passage, data, or record the article relies on.
- Notice whether the source is primary or secondary, and whether the article explains any important limits.
- Compare the strength of the conclusion with what the cited evidence actually demonstrates.
- Look for relevant uncertainty or plausible alternative interpretations, rather than treating a rating as a substitute for reasoning.
The IFCN commitments call for significant sources to be identified in enough detail for readers to replicate the work, with relevant links when available. They also recognize that personal-security risks may justify withholding identifying source details. In that situation, assess whether the article explains the limitation and gives enough remaining information to understand its conclusion. See the IFCN commitments on sources and corrections.
Check claim selection and disclosures for context
Claim selection affects what a site covers and what readers see. Look for stated eligibility criteria and an explanation of why a particular claim was selected. Consider whether the organization describes safeguards intended to prevent undue concentration on one side. No single article can establish how a site behaves across all its coverage, so use more than one example if you are comparing its overall approach.

Funding and organizational disclosures provide context for evaluating possible interests. Check whether those details are specific, current, and easy to find. A disclosure helps readers understand the organization; by itself, it neither proves bias nor settles whether an individual fact-check is sound.

A trustworthy process makes it possible to identify changes and report a problem. Find the corrections policy and complaints channel, then see whether a correction notice explains what changed. The IFCN commitments call for corrections to be made openly and transparently, with the corrected version reaching prior readers as far as practicable. Review the IFCN commitments on corrections.

What an IFCN connection can—and cannot—tell you
The Code is a useful benchmark for organizational processes and transparency commitments. It does not replace examining the claim, sources, and reasoning in the specific article. Nor does a standards framework alone establish a website’s current signatory status or performance; verify any current status directly with the relevant organization or IFCN rather than inferring it from a policy page.
This checklist helps readers compare methods; it does not rank named websites or measure their comparative accuracy. A defensible ranking would require a defined sample of sites and articles, current evidence, and comparable criteria.
